The Danish Girl (15)
Einar Wegener (Eddie
Redmayne) is a respected
artist in 19205 Copenhagen,
who falls in love at first
sight with his bohemian
wife Gerda (Alicia
Vikander).
She is also a painter and
when she asks Einar to
stand in for an absent
female model so she can
complete a portrait of their
flamboyant ballerina friend,
Ulla, the touch of soft fabric
on Einar’s skin awakens
long-dormant feelings.
Adopting the guise of
flame-haired ingenue Lili
Elbe, Einar confronts the
deep-rooted belief that he
has been born into the
wrong body.
“It doesn’t matter what I
wear. When I dream, they’re
Lili’s dreams,” Einar tear-
fully confides to his shell-
shocked spouse.

Eddie Redmayne in The Danish Girl
Supported by Gerda, Lili
approaches controversial
' surgeon Warnekros
(Sebastian Koch) to correct
nature’s mistake, bu the
medical procedure is both
experimental and highly
dangerous.
Redmayne and Vikander
are mesmerising, conveying
their protagonists’ inner
torment with each trem-
bling touch or tearstained
glance, and both deserve
Oscar recognition.
Resplendent cinematogra-
phy and costumes capture
the tightly-buttoned
restraint of an era when a
man who openly questioned
his gender was labelled a
schizophrenic or pervert by
the medical establishment.
Thankfully, times have
changed - too slowly, per-
haps - but well-crafted sto-
ries of triumph against
1adversity like this are time-
ess.
Joy (12A)
In 1990, former airline reser-
vations manager Joy
Mangano developed a proto-
type for a self—wringing mop
that would allow her to
clean the floor without hav-
ing to touch the mop head.
She invested heavily in her
Miracle Mop, risking her
home and some of her fami-
ly’s savings in the belief
that other housewives
would want her labour-sav-
ing device.
Following an appearance
on a home shopping TV net-
work, Mangano sold thou-
sands of her invention, lay-
ing the foundation stone of
a business empire that
boasts more than 150 million
US dollars in sales every
year.
Writer-director David
Russell celebrates this dish»
rags-to-riches story in Joy, a
screwball comedy every bit
as deranged as the firebrand
heroine and the dysfunc»
tional clan around her.
The filmmaker reunites
with actress Jennifer
Lawrence, who adds sparkle
to a film that lurches uncon-
trollably in pace and tone,
and could wring out some of
its own wacky excesses.
Narrated by Joy’s benevo-
lent grandmother Mimi
(Diane Ladd), O Russell‘s
fragmented celebration of
womanhood meets the title
character following her
divorce from her singer hus-
band, Tony (Edgar
Love and Mercy tells the story of the legendary Brian Wilson of The Beach Boys
.—-—_
Ramirez).
One afternoon as Joy
cleans up shattered glasses
filled with red wine using a
traditional mop, she cuts
her hands, and the idea for
the Miracle Mop is born.
Joy takes her prototype to
Neil Walker (Bradley
Cooper), an executive at the
QVC home shopping chan-
nel, who provides her with a
platform to realise her
dreams.
Lawrence illuminates
every frame and is the emo-
tional ballast that prevents
Russell from upending his
oddball creation with vari-
ous flashbacks and narra-
tive detours. A confusing yet
strangely watchable stew of
» ambition and eccentricity.

, American Ultra (15)
The CIA’s top secret Ultra
program is deemed a failure
and the remaining assets »
government-sanctioned
assassins - are declassified.
Their memories are wiped
so they can lead normal
lives with new identities.
CIA agent Adrian Yates
(Topher Grace) orders the
immediate removal of all
remaining Ultra assets
using his reconditioned
mental patients from the
Tough Guy program. The
last Ultra agent in the field
is stoner Mike Howell (Jesse
Eisenberg), who works at a
convenience store in West
Virginia. Mike is blissfully
unaware of his bloodspal-
tered past and frets about
proposing to his pretty girl-
friend, Phoebe (Kristen
Stewart). CIA handler
Victoria Lasseter (Connie
Britten) re-activates Mike
then watches in awe as he
outmanoeuvres Yates‘ psy-
chotic henchmen and goes
on the run with Phoebe. A
bonkers mash—up of a stoner
comedy. spy thriller and
misfiring romance.
The Cobbler (12)
Ma); Simkin (Adam Sandler)
harks from four generations
of cobblers and owns a shop
in a rundown neighbour-
hood of the Lower East Side

ment and gentrification.
When local thug Leon
Ludlow (Method Man) drops,
off a pair of shoes for repair.
Max’s stitching machine
breaks down and he heads
into the basement to use his
father's old equipment.
Unexpectedly. when he tries
on the hoodlum’s footwear.
Max becomes Leon.
So the cobbler excitedly
slips into a variety of boots.
brogues and sandals and
takes on the appearance of
other clientele including
playboy neighbour
Emiliano (Dan Stevens).
Armed with these shape—
shifting powers. Max
attempts to woo local activ-
ist Carmen Herrara
