Old Raanr
Skye Jenkins
SKYE Jenkins, a student at
Monmouth School for Girls,
was sponsored by Ross Rotary
Club to attend the RYLA 2015
and she came to a recent meet-
experiences of that event.
Prior to attending the course
Skye said that speaking in pub-
lic to a group of people, wheth-
er they be friends or strangers,
was a major challenge for her
and whenever possible she
would avoid it. What she hoped
to get from the course was the
confidence to be able to express
herself through public speak-
ing or presentations.
WI - December meeting was
opened by Anne Goodwin who
welcomed guests for the evening.
The speaker for the evening was
Cynthia Preston Jones from
Bucknell. Cynthia has been in the
flower world for many years after
changing careers from being a
school teacher. Training to
become a florist led her to having
a florists shop in Presteigne for
many years. Cynthia judged the
competition for the evening: An
arrangement in a mug. It was won
by Libby Hughes, 2nd Val Burden,
3rd Sue Lloyd and 4th Ros

She talked through some of
the diverse challenges faced by
the groups under guidance of
established team leaders and
elected day leaders and how
these challenges contributed to
team building.
She said the favourite part of
each day for her was sitting in a
circle, as a group. to discuss
what happened during the day
and how they might have done
the task better. Skye was
pleased to add that as a result of
those discussions, their success
rate on other tasks greatly
improved and she successfully
took on the role of day leader

One of the final challenges
was to go to Monmouth town
centre to raise money for the
Marie Curie charity and to find
someone whose birthday it was.
They succeeded in both and
raised £350.
Skye said that RYLA was an
incredible experience and
thanked Ross Rotary for giving
her the opportunity to attend.
Ross Rotary Club meets every
Monday evening 6.30pm for 7pm
at the Chase Hotel. Guests and
potential members are very

Tarrant. Cynthia made some won-
, derful Christmas arrangements
making it look very easy. They
were raffled later, won by pleased
winners. Cynthia was thanked by
Sylvia Evans. Christmas food and
punch was enjoyed by everyone to
finish off an enjoyable evening.
November had been a busy month
for members due to a well sup
ported whist drive where Ann
Hughes had the highest score in
the room. Many more prizes and
draw prizes were won. Many
thanks to Philip Watkins for
being MC for the evening. A trip
to Worcester was again well sup-
ported, an enjoyable day out The
Radnor Arms in New Radnor will
be the venue for the WI dinner. It
will take place' in the New Year.
The next meeting will take place
on February 2 at Walton Village
Hall. The speaker for the evening
will describe life' in a Serbian vil-
lage. Any new members very wel-
come tojoin Always a variety of
topics, speakers, and en] oyable
day trips.

VAGA PROBUS CLUB - Talk by
Dr Tim Brain on Guy Fawkes. the
Gunpowder Plot and Terrorism.
Tim. with a Phd in history and an
ex-chief constable gave us a very
detailed and interesting account
of events and characters involved
leading to the attempted destruc-
tion of the Houses of Parliament
on November 5. 1605. Commonly
known to this day as Bonfire
Night. Whilst this is a historic
event this would today be classed
as terrorism. After Queen
Elizabeth I died in 1603. English
catholics who had been persecut-
ed under her rule had hoped that
her successor. James I, would be
more tolerant of their religion.
James I had. after all had a catho
lic mother. Unfortunately James
did not turn out to be more toler~
ant than Elizabeth and a number
of conspirators decided that vio-
lent action was the answer. A
small group under the leadership
of Robert Catesby felt that violent
action was warranted. Indeed the
