THE police and crime commis-
sioner for the region is consid-
ering a 1.99 per cent increase in
council tax in Herefordshire to
protect the number of police of
ficers for the future.
Bill Longmore thinks raising
the police’s share of council tax
bills in 2016/17 would both help
modernise the West Mercia Police
force and keep as many officers as
possible in communities.
The council tax rise would be
across the West Mercia Force area
— which includes Herefordshire.
Mr Longmore, who became PCC
in November 2012, said: “George
Osborne told us all that police
funding would be protected in
real terms, but it’s become clear DII‘IIPC IaCIE a
that the government won’t be foot- 4 Chai '5

the gap.” \.
He said during his time in of-
fice they have managed to find
millions of pounds in efficiency
savings, while putting an extra 74
police officers on the streets.
He added: “We are now up to
what I consider to be full strength
in terms of officers, and I want
that to be sustained for the fore- .
seeable future.”
