RESTORATION work is now
planned on one of the more
problematic parts of Here-
ford‘s canal as part of a major
new development scheme in
the city.
Codex, the owners of H01-
mer Trading Estate, have been
working with the Hereford-
shire and Gloucestershire Ca—
nal Trust to develop plans for
the canal as part of the redevel-
opment of the industrial area.
Plans were approved earlier
this month to demolish all cur-
rent commercial buildings on
the site to make way for 120
homes.
And the scheme will also see
quarter of a mile of the canal
restored up to Aylestone Park
and will include the transfer of
the restored canal and quarter-
mile tunnel under Aylestone
Hill to the Canal Trust.
David Penny, commercial di-
rector of the Canal Trust, said:
“These proposals represent a
huge step forward in the resto-
ration of the canal within Her-
eford, and will see a very diffi-
cult section restored as part of
the adjoining development.
“We welcome being able to
Canal restoration
The Holmer Trading Estate masterplan sees the canal to the
north of Victoria Park and new houses bordered by the railway
work with developers from
the outset of schemes, and the
scheme will make a huge im-
provement to the area.”
The section to be redevel-
oped will form a continuation
of what is already in place in
Aylestone Park, where a slip-
way has already been built as
well as a major storm overflow
weir for the city centre.
Once complete, the Canal
Trust will widen the section
in the park to meet modern re-
quirements which it believes
will offer a “fantastic” section
of restored canal within the
city.
However, not everyone in the
city will be pleased with the
plans.
A number of companies cur
rently based on the Holmer
Trading Estate, some of whom
have been established for many
years, will need to find new
sites from which to continue
their business.
