rd let herefordtimescom Thursday, January 7 2016 THE HEREFORD TIMES "FARMING MATTERS Eye in sky helping to target resources By Anita Howells 0.73 Km £5794 anita.howelisrlflmitilands, newsquestcauk A DRONE hovers over Herefordshire farmland with the control of a raptor poised to dive for prey. It is focused on a com- bine harvester. A new spreader device on the back is of interest to the farmer and an eye in the sky gives the bird’s eye View needed to show exactly how the chaff is being spread. The drone is in the hands of Edward Dea- con who is trialling it over a neighbour’s land in Much Dewchurch. Quickly the potential for unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) to aid farmers is apparent and for some it has become an invaluable tool in the fight against crop dis- eases andlpests. It flies over the farm with amazing speed and dexterity, beaming live images through a camera to a hand held laptop computer which A bird’s eye view of a combine and tractor during trial flights In Much Dewchurch. can be saved and later analysed. The potential is enor- mous. Edward has set up his own company, Shooting Reels, employ- ing his dad, Stuart, as a useful second pair of hands for the dual con- trol DJI Inspire 1 drone. Stuart can control the camera while Edward concentrates on flying. “There’s loads of po- tential. Basically it’s taking photos and cap- turing video footage of the land. With a bird’s eye view you can get a lot of information. “You can attach an infrared camera to the drone which has the ability to take thermal readings from the land. There’s 3D software which can be used to look at contours of the land and produce a 3D computer model which is good for mapping. “Some farmers are filming their land and putting in GPS coordi- nates which is useful for precision farming, allowing farmers to pin— point where they need to spray which can save TURN TO PAGE 98 Sheep hurdles Bit, 8 bar, green painted & pre galvanized.
