Union slams firefighter PCSOs
By ‘Rebecca Cain
A UNION has criticised
plans to train Police Com-
munity Support Officers
tPCSOsl up as retained
firefighters and claims the
efordshire and Shropshire
will soon begin learning
how to become on-call fire
officers for their respective
fire services.
The initiative agreed be-
tween the Hereford and
Worcester Fire and Rescue
Service and West Mercia
Police was exclusively
revealed by the Hereford
Times last week.
Worcester, said the union
has made their opposition
to the plan clear.
He said:“We are a humani-
tarian service.
“The police do a great job
but they are there to uphold
the law. Our job is humani-
tarian."
The PCSOs. who will un-
dertake five weeks of train—
ing. will be released for
retained duties and train-
West Mercia Police.
Mr Gould said the fire
service currently has a
great relationship with all
parts of the community but
claimed certain parts of the
community do not see the
police in the same light.
He added: “The main risk
is losing our impartiality
with the public. Firefight-
ers will be at greater risk of
dune will lead to physical
and verbal abuse.

gade Union in Hereford and

ing. as and when required,
when they are on duty for
physical and verbal abuse.
“And Hereford will be left
short of PCSOs. If they
can‘t respond to their (fire)
alert because they are deal
ing with a matter as a PCSO,
our appliance might not be
able to go out due to insuf-
ficient crew numbers."
Mr Gould said he believed
the move is all about saving
money.
“We can acknowledge
back-office savings,” he
added.
“But on the front line these
roles need to remain sepa-
rate.”
