A NEW partnership has been
formed to save Hereford from
being a city of empty flower
beds following the decision of
Herefordshire Council and its
contractors, Balfour Beatty, to
withdraw funding for flower
planting.
Hereford in Bloom, which
took gold in the Britain in
Bloom competition three years
running, will work with the
city council and Business Im-
provement District (BID) to en-
sure visitors continue to get a
floral welcome.
The city council has ear-
marked £20,000, and the Bloom
volunteers will contribute
a further £15,000 to the fund
to pay for the plants and for
maintenance and watering by
private gardening companies.
BID will take on the task of
organising a hanging flower
basket scheme for local shops
7. and businesses supplementing
, their work improving the ap-
pearance of the city centre.
Hereford Mayor, Councillor
Charles Nicholls, welcomed
the initiative. He said: “It was
vital for the continued success
of Hereford that the wonderful
award-winning display of flow-
ers beds and planters in the
city should not be abandoned
and end up full of weeds.”
Kevin Knipe, the new chair-
man of Hereford in Bloom said:
“We owe a big debt of gratitude
Kevin Knipe, the new chairman of Hereford in Bloom
to all those local businesses
whose sponsorship of rounda-
bouts and flower beds helps
fund the Bloom project. With-
out their support Hereford
would look pretty dreary.”
The first phase of the project
will concentrate on beds and
planters and the team will be
looking at how to improve the
image of roundabouts.
