The English Symphony Orchestra
is one of his last works, a
magnificent summing up
of his evergreen genius
and gift for melody.
Composer Emily Doolittle,
who now lives in Glasgow
and joins the orchestra for
this concert, has been
hailed as one of the great—
est Canadian composers of
her generation. The ESO‘s
recent performance of her
workfalling still was
described by Classical
Source as “a very beautiful
work drawing the atten-
tive listener in such as way
as to invite ~ if not demand
— quiet contemplation and
sympathy." Green/blue is a
playful and exciting work
full of the kinds of colour-
ful writing its title would
suggest.
The last 18 months have
seen the English §
Symphony gaining nation- ' _, » " ,
al recognition for an out» > '

commissions and record-
ings. Their last perfor-
mance in Hereford as part
of the ESO's 2015 Elgar
Pilgrimage was hailed in
the Hereford Times for the
orchestra‘s “spellbinding
strings" and their recent
performance of Donald
Fraser's orchestral version
of the Elgar Piano Quintet
was named a "2015
Premiere of the Year“ in
Classical Music Magazine.
