LEOMINSTER AND DISTRICT
U3A - Fun with antiques: At the
January meeting of the
Leominster and District
University of the Third Age,
Geoffrey Croft gave a humorous,
interesting and enlightening talk
on the subject of antiques.
Geoffrey, a “Leominster boy”, is a
well-known and much-admired
character around Leominster,
particularly among the antiques
community.
In a talk enlivened with Geoffrey’s
sparkling wit, he described and
passed around his audience a
number of antiques from his per
sonal collection.
The items, all of them over a hun-
dred years old, mainly consisted
of weird and wonderful contrap-
tions (all obsolete now), none of
which your writer could recog-
nise (I’m not a hundred years old,
al)though sometimes it feels like
it .
The various antiques, too numer-
ous to mention all of them here,
included a leather quick-release
dog lead, a boot-shaped brass
plate for reflecting candle-light
into the room, a First World War
brass tourniquet, a suppository
mould, a ham-bone handle and a
candle snuffer and wick trimmer.
He explained that the value (i.e.
price) of antiques is subject to
fashion.
Currently we are being told that
IKEA-type minimalist furniture
is fashionable and this is having a
negative affect on the antiques
trade.
This, coupled with the crash in
value of gold and silver, and the
growing tendency of prospective
customers to engage in haggling,
has cast a slightly gloomy shadow
over the antiques businesses.
Geoffrey’s talk was very well
received, and more than made up
for the obvious discomfort of the
coldest day of the year (so far!).
