I AMBI110US plans have been
revealed by Codex, the owners of
Holmer Trading Estate to develop
Hereford‘s defunct canal as part of
the redevelopment of the industrial
area. The scheme is a partnership
with Herefordshlre and
Gloucestershire Canal Trust and
would see commercial buildings on
the site demolished to make way for
120 homes, as well as a quarter of a
mile of the canal being restored up
to Ayiestone Park, including the
quarter mile tunnel.
I KittyTwiglet: I hope the
council actual make an
effort to re locate the busi-
nesses that are being flat-
tened — so the people in the
houses have employment in
the county. Herefordshire
Council never thinks about
progress properly only bums
on seats to get more money
from central government for
houses never about the
infrastructure (hospital ,
traffic etc) or small business-
es.
I Herefordshire Lad: I love
canals. maybe a floating
barge restaurant could be
established giving sightsee-
ing tours of the 400 yards of
housing. and charging pre-
mium prices for the privi-
lege of being served second
rate fare by uninterested
youngsters. The canal sec-
tion could also be used for
the storage of shopping trol-
1es.
I BtheB:Moan,moan,moan.
I Mr Herefordian: Must
agree, many towns and cities
have this type of feature
within there centres and are
great for visitors and most

I Alanmh: Has the city
centre moved again? This
is nowhere near the city
centre, so will not benefit
anyone really. From memo—
ry the tunnel under the col-
lege hill was sealed off

I In last week's Hereford Times, we revealed how much the county's
two MPs earn from additional employment. We asked readers who took
part in this week’s online poll whether they thought MPs should be
allowed second jobs to boost their annual basic £74,000 salary.
A total of 504 people took part and a majority of 75 per cent said they
thought MPs should give their full attention to representing their constitu-
ents and should not be allowed otherjobs.
A further 18 per cent said their view would be dependent on what the
second job was. However, six per cent of voters said they believed many
politicians could earn far more should they take a job in London's finan-
cial hub and should be allowed additional employment
The remaining one per cent said they did not know.
I Visit herefordtimescom to vote in our online poll
sure someone told me it
had partially collapsed, so
not likely to be viable for
many years.
Another vanity project
(and cash earner for the
broke council with the new
house levy they apply to
properties built these
days).
I Herefordian07: This so
called ‘master plan’ proves
my post from last week, it is
a length of canaljoined to
nothing like the Rotherwas
relief road, one quarter of a
mile of stagnant water to
encourage mosquitos, I hope
it is properly fenced off to
avoid the new residents from
the possibility of drowning.
The council has fallen for the
old carrot from property
developers yet again.
IAd47UK: The canal will
never be restored, we will
just have bits of it, to restore
the canal a lot of buildings
would need to be demolished.
More houses, more traffic.
and no work.
I Herefordisgreat: This
will see part of our heritage
restored in the city and with-
out the canal in this area we
won’t ever see the canal in
the city centre and the tour
ism and jobs that will bring.
The tunnel is reported as
being in perfect condition
and with a full diving survey
to support that if you look
through the committee
papers...and the houses
themselves will pay a sum
each year for the upkeep of
the canal so there will be no
bill to the council. A self—
financing scheme for the
future - surely a few other
things should be like that!!!

Here in Herefordshire we
are developing the UK’s
first let Century universi-
ty to develop a new genera-
tion of highly employable
let Century engineers.
But there we have it, the
very word university
brings with it thousands of
years of history and pre-
conceived ideas. While
some of these help to posi-
tion the modern, not-for-
profit, higher education
institution we are seeking
to establish, others have the
opposite effect.
Therefore, the theme of
my next articles will be to
show just how different
Herefordshire’s new uni-
versity (www.NMiTE.org.
uk) is daring to be so that
we can truly make a differ-
ence — to Herefordshire’s
economy; to UK engineer-
ing businesses; to the UK’s
supply of engineering grad-
uates; to the way engineer-
ing is taught.
We’re not saying that
there’s no innovation in UK
universities today, just that
it can be a slow and
unwieldy process trying to
change established
approaches from within.
Meanwhile, globally, engi-
neering education is inno-
vating at a pace. In the UK,
now more than ever, there‘s
a need for urgent and rapid
innovation; here in
Herefordshire, it’s the right
time, the right place. we
have the right team and we
are set on developing the
right model, establishing
new approaches to govern-
ance, funding, curriculum
development, operating.
teaching, admissions and
more.
The biggest difference
will be the knowledge,
skills and employability of
our graduates and their
ability to succeed in
today’s competitive busi-
ness environment. To
achieve this requires us to
adopt a different struc-
ture, set up to more closely
represent the world we're
trying to prepare students
for - efficient, business-

Over 100 people came to
Herefordshire CAB for help
during the first week after
Christmas.
The move into 2016 for
many has not brought the
new start, new opportunity
or that general wish for a
better year that is such a
common, and not unreason-
able, hope.
The waiting room has
been packed out every day,
and people have brought
with them a multitude of
problems to do with bene-
fits, debt, confusing utility
bills, eviction notices and
possession orders, prob-
lems with broadband and
Facebook accounts, allega-
tions of neighbour nui-
