.l ,4 144 THE HEREFORD TIMES Thursday, January 14, 2016 hereiordtimescom Sport 01 Sportsdesk phone: 01432 845810 email: sport@herefordtimes.com Charlotte sets her sights on Great Britain squad ST WEONARDS‘ Char~ lotte Hodgltins-Byrne has set her sights on a place in the Great Britain under»23 squad after a year of huge upheaval for the rising rowing Star. writes FRANK SMITH. The phrase “going from a big fish in a small pond to a small fish in a big pond“ is one that immediately springs to mind when as sessing HodgkinsByrne‘s 3015. Former Hereford Ca- thedral School pupil Hodg- kins-Byrne has swapped Hartpury College for the University of London and their elite training pro- gramme. The 2014 World Junior champion now has to corn pete with a host of the coun- try‘s leading athletes for a place in the university‘s squad , something which is easier said than done. "At my school I was part of a small squad and at the university there is a squad of around 80 but it is good because it means I have to improve my standards." said HodgkinsByrne. “I am competing against women that are sometimes 24 but in my squad. “I am training with them and competing against them and it has really helped me and pushed me on. Despite the change, Hodg- kins-Byrne, whose older sister Mathilda is also a ris— ing star of rowing, enjoyed a successful 2015. Hartpury College’s girls quad won the National Schools Regatta in May and equalled the course record en route to retaining the Henley Women's Regatta a month later. And now Hodgkins~Byrne is training hard over the winter as she looks to se- cure a place in Great Brit- ain’s under~23 squad. She added: “If Icould make the GB under-23 squad it would be fantastic because I was part of the junior squads so to step up would be a fantastic progression. "I am too young to be in- volved with the Olympics so that is not something I am working towards. “Before this year I was always a sculler but I have started to sweep a bit so in terms of next year, be- ing able to compete in the top boats at my university would be fantastic. Charlotte Hodgkins— Byrne has targeted a place in the Great Britain under-23 squad “It would be great if I could get into the women’s first eights.” o SSE’s Next Generation programme partners with SportsAid to provide finan- cial support and training to the sports stars of the future. Pike, from Kilpeck, was presented with the Cynthia Higgon Award for services to the sport by the Point-to- Point Authority. For five decades, Pike has been in the thick of the point-to-point action, from preparation of the course at Garnons to the taking of entries. He has also been secretary of both the South Herefordshire Hunt fixture and the Welsh Border Point- to-Point Secretaries Asso- ciation (PPSA), as well as partnering his own horses between the flags for more than 30 years before finally deciding to hang up his boots as he neared 70. Stalwarts, such as Willie Peep, Rupert Withy, Sound Golly, Sea Patrol and the Hearty Joker, have given Pike ‘great spins’ and some memorable moments, in- cluding a hard-slogging Vic- tory in the Pentyrch four- mile ‘national’. “Dick has worked so hard for the sport for so long, but he was surprised and shocked to be recognised for it,” said Liz Morgans, who took over the resins as PPSA secretary when Pike retired. The first fixture of the year will take place at: Gar- nons on Sunday, March 6.
