Ex-munitions worker Nancy Evans cutting the cake to officially launch the project By Rebecca Cain 01432 845883 rcai‘r’i‘herefordtimescom Twitter @HTNewsroom I A PROJECT to commemorate the contribution of women who worked at Hereford’s former mu- nitions factory has been launched. The two-year Rotherwas Royal Ordnance Factory (ROF) — Line of Duty initiative will create a digi- tal archive about the former face tory, focusing on the impact it had on Hereford and the women who worked there. Nancy Evans, 97, spoke about the dangers she faced when she worked at the factory during the Second World War, at this month’s launch event at the Herefordshire Archive and Record Office. Author and historian Bill Laws also gave a talk about the site, which became one of the largest explosive filling sites in the UK. Neil Kerr, vice chairman of the Hereford Enterprise Zone, said: “The launch event was a great start to the project, attended by more than 50 people. “Bill brought to life the work- ing day of the munitioneers and it was wonderful to hear Nancy’s account of her time at the factory. “We now want to hear from as many people as possible who ei- ther worked at the factory or who have heard stories from their family members or friends about working there during the First or Second World War. “It is their stories that will bring this project to life and allow us to preserve their memories and sto- ries for generations to come.” Rotherwas ROF — Line of Duty is a joint project by Herefordshire Council, the Hereford Enterprise Zone at Skylon Park, which hous- es the site, and the Herefordshire Archives and Records Centre. The programme also involves working with schools to explore and preserve its history for fu- ture generations alongside talks, films, exhibitions, walks and events. Heritage Lottery Funding of more than £77,000 was awarded towards the £101,000 cost. Organisers are now appealing for people to share their stories linked to the munitions factory at an open day at Herefordshire Ar- chives and Records Centre in Fir Tree Lane, Rothei was 011 Febru- ary 13 from 10am to 4pm. stylish dining \ I half price beds Harrison q§.TAIIOH 31W ‘3’N‘Ci ANNETTS FINE FURNITURE RIBIGSI re 9 CIGCIII Three Elms Road.
