one farmer who uses a
small drone to check over
his sheep flock.
“You need to make sure
that everything within 50
metres is under control.
It's common sense really,“
added Edward. :1 qualified

ity permitted drone opera-

Edward‘s drone can fly up
to five miles. at speeds of
up to 50mph, making light
work of capturing most
county farms. although the

The course, which runs on
January 19 and March 8. is
an introduction to basic
aspects of the agricultural
sector to enable the above
to take place, providing
candidates with the neces-
sary level of knowledge.
The University also host-
ed its third Drones for
Farming conference in
November last year run
by the Unmanned Aerial
Systems Special Interest
Group (UASSIG).
The membership group
focuses on the application
of unmanned aerial sys-
tems in agriculture and is
supported by the univer-
sity’ 3 National Centre for
Precision Farming (NCPF)
and founder member UR.
SULA Agriculture.
Dr Richard Green, aca
demic lead for the NCPF
UAV Special Interest
Group, said. “Much of the
debate centred on the ex-
citing opportunities small
lightweight multi and hy-
per- spectral cameras offer
for detecting and mapping
numeious pests and dis-
eases.
“It is clear that drone
technology has really been
taken to heart by the more
forward looking members
of the agricultural com»
munity.”
Research Assistant at
Harper Adams Jonathan
Gill, who is also a quali-
fied drone pilot, said: “The
agronomic costs of these
systems are coming down
a lot. The 1mp01tant thing
to know is drone imagery
will not solve problems.
It’s a tool for additional in
formation to allow better
judgement and decisions
to be made.
“Last year on Countryfile
they used Precision Hawk
to look at Blackgrass A
wheat field was sprayed off
to kill everything but only
a quarter of the field was
infected. Precision spray
could have done the same
thing and saved costs.
“You could also run a
thermal scanner over a
field to see if it’s the right
temperature for planting
and at this time of year
you can look at quantifying
areas that are flooded.
“Basically it allows an
agronomist or trained
farmer to understand more
about their land ”
