KINGTON’S famous el-
ephant will remain the
backbone of attractions at
the town’s museum, though
new curator Sally Mansell
has much to trumpet for the
forthcoming season.
Growing up in Hereford
shire, 34-year-old Sally has
returned to her roots after
years spent away, and is ea-
ger to get started on prepara-
tions for Kington Museum’s
reopening in April.
She is living over the Welsh
border at Ackhill, where
her husband, Richard, who
also grew up in Leominster,
is minister at the Baptist
Chapel.
“It’s lovely to be back
again,” she said. “And lovely
to have contact with the mu-
seum.”
It was through her local
toddler group that the mum-
of-two learned that a new

“I’m excited and looking
forward to hearing a whole
range of stories and learn
ing about the objects,” she
added. "I want to get back to
work.”
She read history at univer—
sity in Sheffield, and went
on to do voluntary work in
museums, and a special mu-
seum course in Manchester.

open days.
She is already mapping out
her plans for Kington, an in—
dependent museum run by
volunteers, and plans to in-
troduce a timeline of exhib-
its, covering subjects such
as agriculture, the old tram—
line and the railway
She adds that, central to
all, will continue to be the
massive elephant skull and
bones excavated by work-
men during a major house
building project opposite
Kington’s Tavern pub nearly
“The elephant is a key 0b-
the museum.” she said.
