herefordtimescom Starman Thursday, January 14, 2016 THE HEREFORD TIMES 5 lit flame Mott the Hoople: From left, Verden Allen, Ian Hunter, Dale Griffin and Pete Overend Watts, who were both from Ross-on-Wye, and Stoke Lacy’s Mick Ralphs ONE of Mott the Hoople’s founding members say he will remain ‘forever grate- ful’ to David Bowie. Verden Allen joined those around the globe in paying tributes to the singer who died on Sunday, recalling how Bowie helped his for- mer band become a house- hold name. Mott the Hoople had their roots in Herefordshire and had built up a cult follow- ing in the early 19703. But despite gigging across the country they were consid- ering splitting up when a certain superstar leant . them a hand. Bowie pledged to help them when he heard of their troubles, offering them his song, All the Young Dudes. By Ben Goddard 01432 845882 bgo@herefordtimes.com Twitter (fitHTnewsroom “We had a big cult fol- lowing and David Bowie admired the band and liked our style of music and dress,” said Mr Allen, Hoople’s keyboard player. “Our guitarist Pete Over- end Watts heard he was in terested about the band so contacted him and asked if he could help. We said to him that if we didn’t find a manager we would have to pack up. He had a word with his manager who said he would manage us, look after us and get us a record deal. Bowie said he had a song he would like us to record which was All the YoungDudes. “So we all got together and he played the song to us on his acoustic guitar. We loved it and went back to the studios with him." Regarded as one of the best _- glam rock anthems, All the . Young Dudes reached num- ber three in the UK charts. Their album of the same name, produced by Bowie. made it to number 21. Mr Allen added: “He was very easy to work with. but you could tell he was going to become a big star. Without that song it might have been the end for Mott the Hoople so I am forever grateful. We did a gig in David Bowie and his wife Iman Abdulmajid JVIUIT‘Gfe HOOPLE Ell llll‘ young A .3 .. The artwork for the band's album All the Young Dudes Philadelphia and he turned up as a guest vocalist." Mr Allen left the band to start the Cheeks with James Honeyman-Scott and drummer Martin Cham- bers, who would both go on to form The Pretenders.
