HOLMER WI — Our first meeting
in 2016 was led by member
Maureen Graver and was a fasci-
nating description, with slides, of
a recent holiday she had with her
husband in Burma, now
Myanmar. The country really
only opened up to tourism in 2011
and, therefore, they were advised
that they could only visit on an
organised tour which they booked
with a company called
Trailfinders. They flew for 12.5
hours to Bangkok, then on to
Myanmar for a further hour and a
quarter, looking forward to their
trip with increasing excitement
and anticipation. Although they
were the only tourists on the trip,
they were met with great friendli-
ness by the local people who pro-
vided guides for their travel expe-
riences. They visited markets
where produce, including meat
and fish, was displayed out in the
open air. The local people proved
to be very proud of their crafts
such as lacquer work, marquetry,
basket making, wheelwrights, silk
making, weaving, paper making
and confidently showed their
skills off to the Gravers.
They visited Yangon, the capital
of Myanmar with five million
inhabitants, where they saw the
cathedral and many pagodas
which Marco Polo described as
one of the best sights in the world.
Ninety per cent of the population
is Buddhist and their temples are
built to inspire inner peace.
The next stop was Bagan. where
they saw a monastery made from
teak where 3000 Buddhist monks
lived. The interior of the monas-
tery was decorated with peacocks
and lotus flower motifs. On with
the tour, on the Irrawaddy river,
1348-miles long. En route they
stopped off at an old peoples
home, a gold leaf workshop, saw
the golden entrance to the
