City’s fire incident
unit 18 taken away
A FIRE se1v1ce vehicle which
deals with major contamina-
tions has been withdrawn
from Hereford.
The only incident response
unit (IRU) within the Her-
eford and Worcester Fire and
Rescue Service was based at
Hereford Fire Station.
Following a move by the gov-
ernment to reduce the num-
ber of IRUs in England by 22,
the one at Hereford was with—
drawn at the end of last year.
IRUs provide decontamina-
tion facilities at the scene of a
chemical, biological, radiolog—
ical or nuclear incident, such
as in potential terror attacks.
Spokesman for the Hereford
and Worcester fire service
Jessica Chadwick said they
were told by the government
that the IRU will no longer
be called upon as part of the
national strategy fer mass de-
contamination from Decenr
ber 31. 2015. and will cease to
be funded from March 31 this
year.
She said: “This IRU formed
part of the national structure
to deal with mass decontami-
nation of members of the pubs

lie.
“The vehicle was provided,
and funded, by central govern-
ment over a decade ago and
was located in the service as
pa1t of the national st1 ategy.
“A revised national risk as-
sessment has seen an overall
reduction in the number of
these vehicles.
“However, substantial num»
bers of IRUs remain available
across the UK and a number
are still available within the
West Midlands region.”
Ms Chadwick said a a small-
er specialist decontamination
facility is being secured for
Hereford Fire Station.
A FURNITURE retailer

ford on Saturday and donated
a life size bagpipe cake to a 10‘
cal charity.
Hereford Mayor Charles
Nicholls had the honour of
cutting the ribbon to the new
Oak Furniture Land store on
the Salmon Retail Park on
Holmer Road which has cre-
ated seven jobs.
“This new store is a welcome
investment in terms of job
creation and is a good addi-
tion to the choice of shops
for local residents,” said Cllr
Nicholls.
The cake was donated to the
Herefordshire Burns Club
and was showcased'at their
annual burns night
Money raised from the even-
ing went to a number of char-

River cleaned up as water levels subside
NEW additions to Hereford s
Old Bridge were revealed as
water levels on the River Wye
finally dropped.
The city 3 main waterway
was constantly close to break-
ing its banks through Janu-
ary, owing to heavy rainfall
on both sides of the Welsh
border. But as water levels
gradually eased off, so did the
reach of the Wye.
And it was not only flood
water that had been coming
down the river.
Environment Agency offi-
cials were soon on the scene
to remove the branches and
debris on the city landmark.
