Landmark day as Ladies
play their first-ever match
ROSS Juniors Ladies
played their first competi‘
tive football match last Fri-
day.
The team have trainedjust
fire times and were keen
to play a match and wear
their new kit. sponsored by
Berry Game Birds.
However. there are only
two other female sides in
Herefordshire ~ Bartestree
and Lads Club — so finding
the right opposition for the
new team proved tricky.
Fortunately. Dave John-
son‘s Under~16 Ross Jun-
iors‘ girls team. who play
in the Gloucestershire
Girls League. stepped for—
ward. The game attracted
quite a bit of interest local-
ly. with more than 60 spec—
tators turning up at John
Kyrle High School to watch
the match.
The Under-16s proved to
be strong opponents and
took an early lead before
sealing the game with an—
other goal after the break.
Ross Ladies manager Paul
FOOTBALL
Flitney said his team were
thrilled with the result and
are keen for a rematch.
“Minnie Hodges. when
called on in goal. made
some great saves.
"And some of the more
experienced Ross players.
like Danie” Ward, Rosie
Davenport and Nicola Wall
caused the under-16 de-
fence problems all game,“
said Flitney.
"Half the current team
have played plenty of
women‘s and girls' football
previously. for many of the
others it was their first-
ever competitive game of
football.
"A couple of players have
been to as many team so-
cials as training sessions,
which clearly illustrates
the teams ethos is about
having fun. getting fit and
socialising.“

Moon
laments
Lads’
fortune
HEREFORD Lads Club
player-manager Danny
Moon rued his side’s luck
after they drew 0-0 with
Shifnal Town in West Mid-
lands (Regional) League Di~
vision One.
Moon felt Shifnal should
have had a player sent off
early in the game after Tom
Harding was through on
goal.
“He pulled him back when
he was-one-on-one and was
about to shoot, but he only
got yellow carded with
a free—kick awarded on
the edge of the box,” said
Moon.
“We hadn’t played since
December 5, so we went out
to be solid at the start and
not concede an early goal.
“On the balance of play,
it’s probably a point
gained, but we had two or
three good chances and our
keeper didn’t have to make
a save.”
The draw leaves Lads Club
17 points behind leaders
AFC Ludlow, but with six
games in hand.
It means Moon’s side will
have to play four games in
the last week of the season.
“We have got a big squad
and if we win our games in
hand we go top,” said Moon.
“We could fall apart or we
could win them all.’
Kington Town only had
a Miles Langford goal to
show for their efforts as
they went down 2-1 to Team
Dudley.

a mixture of consistent play

on the greens.
His 35 points score made
him the deserved winner,

lO-man Welly fight
back to earn point
FOOTBALL
WELLINGTON held on for
a point against Ellesmere
Rangers in West Midlands
(Regional) League Premier
Division after having Aar-
on Morgan sent off.
Morgan was dismissed
early in the game after be-
ing deemed the last man
when making a challenge.
Welly were already 1-0
down at that stage with
Ellesmere opening the scor-
ing after only two minutes.
Derek Williams then
changed tactics and played
one up front, with Jamie
Yau, Ben Fischer and Nick
Williams all outstanding.
In the second half, Adam
Newbury controlled the
midfield and Welly were
the better team.
Their hard worked paid
off when they levelled with
20 minutes to go.
Ellesmere’s goalkeeper
kicked the ball short, lead-
ing to Mike Olive pouncing.
Wellington then had
chances to win the game,
with Glen Segust hitting
the bar and Saul Thomas
and Matt Williams also go-
ing close.
The result leaves Welling-
ton in 12th place in the divi-
sion going into this Satur-
day’s trip to Dudley Sports.
