Replacement tree
moved to new site
A TREE which was origi—
nally planted by royalty
has been replaced in a Her-
efordshire village.
The tree in the centre of
Holme Lacy was blown
down around two years ago
in a storm.
It was planted in 1902
by Princess Beatrice, the
daughter of Queen Victo-
ria, to commemorate her
visit to nearby Holme Lacy
House.
She was in Hereford at the
time to lay the foundation
stone for the new Hereford
town hall when she made
the short trip over the river
to Holme Lacy.
To commemorate thr- mo
ment and to ensure rim!
the landmark remained in
the village. parish coumgil-
lors planted another tree in
its place last week.
Hereforrlshire and Lud-
low rlollege‘s 'rlolme Iilfi'.‘
campus mil also provide
railings to go around the
tree later in the year.

A FORMER soldier at-
tacked his partner’s es—
tranged husband with a
golf club outside‘ their
Leominster home, a court
heard.
Richard Davies, 44, of
Ryelands Road, was found
guilty after a trial of the
assault of his girlfriend’s
ex — and near neighbour —
Stephen Button-Davies.
Hereford Magistrates
heard Mr Bufton-Davies
is still married to Davies’
partner of two years.
Adrian Jones, prosecut-
ing, said the victim called
police at 10pm on July 1
after hearing that his ex-
partner had been abused.
Police arrived at the
house and no further ac-
tion was taken.
However, after offic-
ers left the premises, Mr
Bufton-Davies began talk-
ing to his ex-wife through
the fence that separated
their two respective
homes.
“The defendant then
said: ‘I’ve got something
for you’," added Mr Jones.
“And swung a golf club
towards him which hit
his right hand. The injury
sustained was minor.”
Davies then left the scene
and police were again
called. He was arrested af-
ter police found golf clubs
in his bedroom.
A probation report stated
that Davies didn’t accept

the accusation and said
it was a ‘fabrication’. It
stated that he did have golf
clubs but they were dusty
and hadn’t been used. He
was not working after be—
ing discharged from the
armed forces four years
ago on medical grounds fol-
lowing a car accident.
Chris Reid, defending
Davies, described the situ-
ation as complicated.
He said: “Mr Bufton-
Davies is still married to
his ex-partner who now
lives with Davies.They
are neighbours and their
houses back onto each
other so they are living
very close. There are major
disparages in the evidence
and the injury is a grazed
knuckle.”
Magistrates ordered
Davies to complete a sh:-
month community order
including 10 days of reha-
bilitation. He was also or-
dered to pay a £30 fine, £60
victim surcharge and £300
costs.
Davies was also given a re
straining order not to con-
tact or indirectly contact
Stephen Bufton—Davies.
