Ross win
to boost
hopes of
going up
THREE quick tries in the
third quarter ensured Ross-
on-Wye beat Westbury-on-
Severn 21-7 at Greytree to
keep their slim Gloucester
Two promotion hopes alive.
For the majority of the
first half Ross were unable
to impose their game, with
scrums and lineouts domi-
nating.
Westbury camped them-
selves in Ross’ 22 and the
home side would have gone
into the half-time break be-
hind if it was not for their
strong defence.
But Ross were much braver
with the ball in the second
half and it wasn’t long be-
fore they opened their ac-
count for the afternoon.
Some good approach work
from the forwards and
backs put Billy Hambling
into space and he ran on to
touch down. Thai Hayward
added the conversion to put
Ross 7-0 up.
Ross’ performance was in
stark contrast to their first-
half display, with forwards
and backs running hard
and direct at the Westbury
defence.
It was inevitable that an-
other score would come and
it duly arrived courtesy of
Huw Bellamy, who finished
off a move that saw Ross
run and offload the ball
from well within their own
half. Hayward again kicked
over the extras.
Within minutes, Ross were
21-0 up thanks to another
great move. This time, Josh
Element touched down fol-
lowing a well—timed pass
from his brother Ben; Bel-
lamy this time stepping up
to convert the extras.
Hayward later left the field
following a cut to his head,
but Ross managed to hold on
despite Westbury grabbing
a late penalty try.
Rampant Hereford thrash their derby rivals
local bragging rights after
thrashing Colwall &
Malvern 5-0 in Severn
Division One of the West
Clubs’ Women’s Hockey
League.
The victory means
Hereford are now just three
points behind Colwall in the
division. It was also a good
day for Hereford’s first
team, who came away from
City of Bath with a 2~1 win
in Premier Division 2A.
However, Leominster lost
6-2 to Bretforton in North
Division, while Ross-on-
Wye went down to a 4-2
HOCKEY
home defeat against
Chipping Camden in Severn
Division 2.
Colwall 2nds also sus-
tained a heavy defeat after
losing 7-1 at home to
Cirencester 3rds in Severn
Division 3. In the GoCreaB
Hockey League, both
Hereford and Leominster
lost their respective games
in Conference North.
Leominster were beaten 3-0
at home to Firebrands 2nds,
while Hereford went down
by the same scoreline
against Team Bath
Ross-on-Wye, who did not
play last Saturday, are now
second in De Crymru & The
Marches 2 following
Stroud‘s 1-0 win against
Cheltenham 4ths.
However, Ross can overtake
Stroud this weekend due to
them playing the
Gloucester-shire side at
Monmouth School.
In Marches 1, Leominster
2nds got the better of
Abergavenny in a nine—goal
thriller, prevailing 54.
Hereford 2nds also
enjoyed a win, overcoming
Gloucester City 2nds 1-0.
