CHAPTER XVIII .
During the weeks of his illness and re- Bovery Dr. Tregony had lain awake through many long and silent hours , trying to think out the problem of his " accident , " as it was called . Dr. Polwhele had suggested , when he began to get better , that he should be re- moved to an upstairs room ; but Tregony had
begged to be allowed to remain where he was . He liked the room ; it was large and airy , and well furnished - a very much pleasanter place in which to spend his days and nights than an ordinary bedroom . And he had a feeling that if he ever solved the mystery of his " acci- dent he would do so in the room in which the shot was fired .
At the beginning he was in too much pain to think at all . Then weakness supervened , and for a week or two his brain was so muddled that he found it impossible to think consecutively on any subject ; but as his brain cleared and his strength came back , his thoughts returned constantly and almost au- tomatically to the one question , " Who fired the shot , and why ?
He had no enemies , as far as he knew , and so he dismissed the idea of revenge . He was not superstitious , and the suggestion of the supernatural did not worry him a moment , and so by a process of elimination he arrived at two conclusions - first , that the object of the intruder was robbery ; and , second , that there was some way into the house unknown to the occupants . Who the robber might be was for the moment a matter of small concern ; the prin- cipal thing was to discover , possible , how he got into the house . He remembered hear- ing some of the old people speak of Burwood as Smugglers ' Keep . It had been built by an early Trefusis , who was notorious for his activities in that particular line . That was fact that might prove of considerable import ance in his investigations . As his ' mind re- volved round this pivot , he recalled a tradi- tion that old Amos Trefusis had employed only foreign workmen in the erection of his house , whom he had brought across Spain and Normandy in his own boats , and shipped them back again when their work was done . If that were true , then the most reasonable conclusion to be drawn was that he had certain secrets which he wished to keep from the natives of St. Olaves - secrets most likely connected with his trade .
from
What were those secrets ? It was well known that the cliffs were pretty well honey- combed with which could be caves , ap- proached by boat - not without risk - at cer- tain states of the tide , and there was a tradi- tion that some of these caves had been used in generations gone by as a storing place for contraband goods .
Nobody entered those caves now , or made the attempt . Smuggling was a lost art ; or , if not actually lost , was much too difficult and hazardous to be profitable . But in the days when old Amos Trefusis built Burwood smug ling was common up and down the coast . The house was in a hollow of the cliff , and not more than five or six hundred yards away
from its edge . The bank that rose steeply between Burwood and the sea had been
planted with trees by old Amos himself . Originally the hillside had been perfectly bare . Why had old Trefusis selected that particular spot for his house , and why had be employed foreign workmen to erect it ?
Tregony felt that in the answer to these questions lay very largely the solution of his problem . As his mind continued to revolve round this pivot he recalled the fact that the library was the most westerly room in the house , and that the bank had been cut away to make room for the building , so that the ground outside was much higher than the Hoor of the library .
But none of these facts reached their full significance in his mind till & certain night to which we have already alluded . He was lying awake his mind swinging like a pendulum between May Trefusis and the problem which he had set himself to solve - when he became conscious of noises , muffled and far away , the like of which he had not heard before .
He sat up in bed and strained all his atten- tion to listen . The noises continued at inter- vale , but he could make nothing of them they were too confused and distant . There was no wind , and the surge of the sea was still . He got out of bed at length , and moved to different parts of the room in the hope of locating the sounds , but this did not prove quite so easy as he had expected . First they seemed to come from one direction and then from another , but , curiously enough , never from the outside . He lay down at length with his ear to the floor , and the sounds seemed to gain in distinctness .
Suddenly , as though a curtain had been re . moved or a door thrown open , he caught the sound of voices . He could not distinguish any-
bat .
On the night of his disappearance he was in an unusually restless mood . He , too , was sorry that his pleasant intercourse with May Trefusis was so soon to end . She had become very dear to him , and to miss her daily visita would be to miss the sweetest thing in life . The days would seem very dark and long without a sight of her face , and he knew he would pine more and more for her as the days went by .
After Mrs. Hyder had taken her departure he drank the cup of cocoa and ate a couple of biscuits , then he filled his pipe again and stretched out his legs before the fire . It was bedtime , he knew , but he was too restless , his brain too active , to think of sleep yet . He
might as well sit by the fire as lie tossing be-
tween the sheets .
dreaming , he did not know . How long he sat there idly musing and The house had grown perfectly still . His mind lazily fol- lowed one train of thought and then another : beautiful pictures in which May was the cen- tral figure shaped themselves and vanished . Hopes brightened for a few moments and went out in darkness .
Then he leant forward with a sudden move- ment and listened . From somewhere behind the wainscoting to the left of the fireplace he heard a shuffling , grating noise , as though pebbles were grinding against each other . At first the noise was indistinct and far away , but it came nearer and nearer , and gave him the impression of padded feet slipping on a gravelly road .
He sprang from his chair at length and crept close up to the wainscoting . For several seconds longer the sounds continued , coming nearer and nearer , then suddenly ceased . Tregony pressed his ear to the wainscoting tently . The sounds began again after awhile , with fast - beating heart , and listened in but less definite and distinct , and as the and more indistinct , till at length they ceased momente passed away they became fainter It seemed to him as if someone altogether . with muffled feet had come close up to the wainscoting , paused , and gone back again .
Clearly , then , the secret lay behind the He fetched his candle and wainscoting . examined carefully the panels of heavy and solid oak . Not a crack or cranny was to be seen , not a sign of hinge or bolt . A better or more solid piece of work he had never examined . He set down his candle on a table near , and began to finger it - to press it . He used his knees , his shoulders , but it was as firm as a rock . He took up his candle again and made a fresh examination , but all to no purpose . The oak was black with age , and hard as flint .
He set down his candle a second time , and began to rub his hands over the polished sur- face . There might be some inequality un- noticed by the eye which hid some secret spring , but he gave up that idea after awhile and returned to his seat . He could not rest there , however . He hated being beaten . He was morally certain there was " secret passage behind that polished wall of oak , and he did not want Jago to have the credit of discovering it . He was human enough to desire the credit himself .
He got up from his chair and walked back to the same spot , and resting his left hand on a ledge , he touched lightly one of the panels , and it began to move , sliding to the right with all the smoothness of a well - oiled piston - rod , revealing large open space behind . Seiz ing his candle , he stepped through , and the panel closed behind him with a snick

In front of him was a heavy oaken door , black with damp and age , which stood slightly ajar , the bolts being on hie side . pulled it more widely open , and passed on into a narrow tunnel which slanted down at
steep incline . He was so excited that he gave himself no time to think of the consequences of his action . Had he done so he might have hesitated and turned back . The question of consequences , however , did not cross his mind . The adventure was so exciting that he did not think of peril . He was out to probe the mystery to the bottom , and he was going
to do it .
Almost before he was aware , he turned a sharp corner and found himself in a large and dimly - lighted cave . He was not , at all sur- prised ; indeed , he had expected something of the kind . He glanced round for a moment at the kegs and bales piled one above the other , then drew back with a little cry .
A tall , thick - set figure seemed to rise from the ground in front of him , and he found him self looking down the muzzle of a pistol ! He took a step or two backward , and found himself against a solid wall of rock . Be looked eagerly right and left , but the narrow tunnel down which he had come seemed to
have disappeared . He was hemmed in on all sides , and in front of him stood this heavy figure holding a pistol to his head .
For moment he scarcely realised danger , then it swept over him like a tidal W & TC . He was completely at this man's mercy . " Well , " he said at length , striving hard to keep his voice steady , " what do you intend to do ? "
" Shoot you ! " was the sudden answer " Why shoot met Tregony questioned , the
was safe to do so .
At present , however , stocks were running comparatively low . Watty Grigg and his three men ( one of whom was his son ) , who combined deep - sea fishing with smuggling , were long overdue . They had landed a cargo of contraband goods on the night previous to the expected wedding ; but had not brought their fish into St. Olaves . Since when no tid- ings of them had been received .
Jeth was getting decidedly anxious . Watty and his crew were in a sense the last of their race , and if by any chance they had gone to the bottom , the whole business would col- lapse , unless others could be got to take their place .
For weeks past Jeth had anxiously awept the sea with his glass , hoping for Watty's return . Jeth was in a very reflective mood as he lighted his lantern . Things had not gone well of late . He had no fear respecting his own safety ; but things had happened that worried him , and one enterprise of his had proved dead failure .
After he had lighted his lamp he rose to his feet , and made his way by a steep and tortuous path to the lower regions . He made little or no noise , for his shoes were carefully wrapped round with sacking .

sprang forward , and a moment later the three of them were in a heap on the floor . " Keep him down " hissed the witch . " Bang him on the head again if he moves . "
Jeth began to struggle And kick in a dazed kind of way , and Molly hit him on the head again with the heavy end of her stick .
Now help me to bind him , " she said . " There's any amount of cord littered about on the floor . " And before Jeth had fully come to himself he was not only bound but trussed , and had more the appearance of an
Egyptian mammy than anyone live Tregony eat on the floor almost ready to faint . He had put forth all his strength , which was not great , in his struggle with Jeth , and in so doing had torn open the wound , which had insufficiently : healed , and he was now losing blood rather rapidly .
" Has he hurt you ? " the witch gasped . " It's the old hurt , " " Tregony answered faintly ; " but we can soon stop the bleeding if you will do what I tell you . '
Molly was rather skilful as a nurse , and by the time she had carried out Tregony's in- structions Jeth had recovered his senses , and was swearing and cursing like madman . " Curse away ,
relieve your mind , aid , the witch , " if it will " How did you get here ! " he demanded . " The same way you did . "
" You've been spying on me , you infernal hag ! "
" I have . Is there anything else you would like to know ! "
" Ay . I'd like to know why you've tied me up like this ? "
" To keep you out of further mischief . " Jeth broke out again into violent cursing , during which he writhed and twisted and grew almost black in the face .
" Not very comfortable , eh ? " the witch questioned , cynically . " Sorry , but it's the beat we can do for the present . "
Then she turned to Tregony : " You've had a very narrow squesk , young man , " she said , quietly . " Your being
" I realise it , " he answered . here was surely a providence . "
" I'd have shot im in another moment , " Jeth roared , with a foul oath .

" You mean- ? " mystery of Burwood House .
She drew a pair of thick worsted socks over her shoes , and then began , her descent with the tread of a cat . Passing at length under a narrow natural arch she found herself on the
second ledge , the strata of which dipped steeply towards a small cove hollowed out of the cliff .
Keeping close to the cliff's face she found herself at the mouth of a cave , the floor of which was still deep in water . Jeth had dis- appeared , and there was no gleam of light anywhere . Whether he had dropped into the water and waded up into the cave , or whether there was another way into it , she could not discover .
She knew that the tide would ebb for another half - hour , and she thought it just possible that by waiting she would be able to
enter the cave dry shod . She strained her . eyes in all directions to discover another en trance , but in the dim light she could see
none , so she resolved to wait for awhile where
she was .
She listened with every sense alert , but no sound reached her ears save the soft lap , lap , of the see among the rocke , and the wash of of the pebbles far up the cave .
She was not in the least afraid that Jeth
would discover her , and even if he did she
imagined she would be quite a match for him . The water slowly drew away from the floor of the cave as the tide ebbed , and at length
ahe resolved to make the venture . It would mean wet feet , but she could not help that . Slowly she edged her way forward , and at length she found herself standing in a foot of water and the intense blackness of the cave in front of her . In a few minutes she was on dry , firm sand , and a little later on damp , slippery rock .
She had now to grope her way on her hands and knees into the unknown . This she did with wonderful speed and agility , considering the intense darkness of the place and the slip- pery state of big rocks over which she had
to creep .

" I own I quences , " ought to have known better . " What are you going to do with me ? " Jeth thundered , with a fresh volley of oathe and more fruitless struggles . " Hand you over to the police in due course , " was the witch's quiet reply . " That means prison ! " he roared . " And the gallows , " she answered . He almost foamed at the mouth at this

" Tregony picked up his candle and led the which he had entered ; but he had not gone He thought he knew the opening by way . far before he turned back and tried another . This led into a labyrinth of cracks and erevices , which twisted and turned in all
directions .
He tried several of the larger openings , but the further he explored the more bewildered he got , and he feared he would not be able to find his way back to the cave again . To make matters worse , his candle was burning low and his strength fast failing him . After the best part of an hour in pushing forward and retreating - turning now in this direction , and now in that , and getting utterly befogged and bewildered , he
She came at length , as she expected she would , into a large , dimly - lighted , and irre gular cave . For awhile she crouched on her hands and knees , perfectly still . The place ep - found himself back at the point from which peared to be deserted . A solitary lamp stood on the floor , and all around were kegs . and packages of various sizes . She noticed , too , after awhile , that the sides of the cave ap- peared to be honeycombed by smaller caves ,
some close to the ground , some three or four feet above it , some round like the port - hole of a ship , others like wide cracks or fissures , She selected one of these recesses at length in which to hide herself and wait . She could not help wondering what had become of Jeth . Where had he disappeared ! What game was he up to !
The recess she had selected was like a small cauldron , perfectly round and smooth , and deep enough to hide her completely . She whole cave . could peep over the rim and command the
While she waited her brain worked rapidly . To make Jeth a prisoner in his own dungeon , and afterwards drag him forth into the light would be great sport . But could she do it course , on the chances that fate or fortune single - handed ? Everything would depend , of threw in her way . Anyhow , he was quite u suspicious , and that was all in her favour . She drew back her head at length , and listened . From somewhere in the distance came the slow padding of muffled feet . " Evidently this cave is connected other caves , " was her thought ; " or perhaps he has been making a fresh attempt . " And crooked smile spread itself over her face . " I believe my suspicion is a right one , " she said to herself a moment later . " This cave belonged to old Trefusis , and he had a private way into it of his own . Strange that the secret of it should have been lost . "

The sound of padded feet grew nearer , and she recognised Jeth's voice as he grumbled to himself . He appeared suddenly out of one of the fissures , swinging his lamp , and muttering curses as he stumbled into the light .
He set his lamp on the floor , and sat down heavily on a bale of goods , and began to fill his pipe . That done , he lighted it from his lamp , and began to smoke . He was evidently in no hurry . He smoked slowly and medita- tively , and the odour of the tobacco floating scross the cave touched the witch's nostrils ,

voices he had no doubt whatever . When he got into bed again his nebulous theorisings had hardened into conviction . There was & reason why the old people spoke of the house as Smugglers ' Keep . When John Trefusis's grandfather chose the site , he had an eye to
business . He had provided a way to his ware- house which did not necessitate his going through the front door . He could go and come without his movements being seen by anyone . But that was not all . It seemed clear to
him that smuggling was still being carried on -not to any large extent , perhaps , but a few people were undoubtedly employed in the trade . Also it was evident that the secret way into the house had been discovered - no doubt
of the cold . " I have done you no harm . " " You will do if you escape , " was the reply . " How can I ? " Tregony faltered . " I don't even know who you are . "
" You have found your way here - that is enough . The only other man that ever did it
is at the bottom of the sea . " " You mean Frank Carleon ? " " Never mind who . Anyhow , he ain't told no tales , and you'll tell none . " " But the way I've come others will come ? " You'll be recently . A smuggler had crept in , intending out of it , any road , " he said . Tregony looked around him hopelessly , his more desirable than it did just How thoughtless and foolish he had

" Then why don't you do it ! " he roared . " We're going to , " she answered , and she went to the side of the cave and took a care- ful survey of the place and the position of the various kegs and bales That done , she began to retreat backwards , and beckoned Tregony to follow her .

He could hardly suppress a groan . He was sick and faint and in considerable pain .
"
It takes the tide six hours to come in , " she went on , and it will take six hours to go out . There's no help for it . "
He sat down on a damp boulder , and was silent .
" Perhaps we'd better go back and keep Jeth company , , " she ventured at length . " " No , let us stay here , " he pleaded . " We can watch the tide rising , and then we shall see it fall . "
So they sat in silence and waited .

er ravens , the scent of roses after the fumes of a charnel house .
She stole her arm round the sleeping man and pressed closer to him . The amell of his hair was like frankincense and myrrh in her nostrils . She forgot that he was full- grown man . He seemed only a child to her soft and warm against her heart . She was afraid to move lest she should awake him . She listened to his breathing as mother listens to the breathing of her first - born , and was half - afraid lest the beating of her heart should disturb his slumber ,
The minutes travelled slowly by and grew into hours . The tide rose to its full and be gan to retreat , she was cold and cramped with sitting in the same position , and yet she would not siir . Indeed , she hardly felt the chill of the cavern , so intent was she in trying to realise to the full this new sensation .
She did not try to check it . Somewhere st the back of her mind was a vague , undefined thought that one hour of love was worth a Hfetime of scorn and hate that love alone was life , and that all the rest was a mere matter of marking time . Passion , such as the young feel , was gone beyond recall - dead as the flowers of the previous spring , but the diviner part of love had awakened with trembling lids and wondering eyes . She would never be quite the same again .
For the rest of mankind ahe might still feel seorn and contempt , but for this young man , who had lain and alept upon her bosom , whose heart had beat close to hers , and the scent of whose hair was in her nostrils , she would always feel a tender regard . In a sense he belonged to her , and would always belong to her . She had saved his life . But for her timely aid he would be lying dead , buried perhaps under a heap of stones , and no one would know the manner of his death .
Tregony fell asleep at , length from sheer weakness and exhaustion , with his head on He finished his pipe at length , and was on the witch's shoulder . She drew as close to the point of knocking out the ashes , when he him as possible and wrapped her cloak around him , and as she did so new and paused suddenly , and raised his head in a listening attitude . strange feeling crept into her heart The witch listened also . seemed to warm all her blood . The mother instinct that had lain dormant so long awoke within her , and shook her with a passion of sympathy she did not understand and melted her almost to tears .
Very distinctly the sound of footsteps fell on the ears of both - not padded or muffled . The boots of the newcomer crunched the gravel of road . The witch held her breath , and wondered what was going to happen . Jeth sprang to his feet , and dived his right hand into his coat pocket . His face became set in cruel , determined lines . What had happened was clear enough to , him , and almost equally
clear to the witch .
In a few minutes Dr. Tregony emerged into the dim light carrying a candle , and was in a moment confronted by Jeth holding a pistol to his head .
The witch drew herself together and pre- pared to spring . She heard the conversation that passed between them , and was quite satisfied that Jeth would not hesitate to shoot . " One - two - three - four " rang out clearly in the silence . Tregony closed his eyes and waited . He had given up hope . This was the end , and any and more inglorious he could not imagine . Five six - seven - eight bers fell more rapidly from Jeth's lips . " Nine ten - eleven

It was an experience that she knew would never come to her again ; it was the first of its kind and would be the last . Never again would a human face lie warm upon her bosom , and she wanted to make the most of this strange and sweet emotion .
It would be something to remember in the dark daye and darker nights that were to come a breath of summer warmth in the winter of her loneliness , a sunbeam lying on a dungeon floor .
The day began to dawn at length some- where in the east . She felt it rather than saw it . The weight of darkness pressed less heavily upon her eyes . Patience , and the heaving water would bring upon its bosom some reflection of the glow that suffused the morning sky . It came at length , so faint as scarcely to be discerned . She watched with thankful yet pathetic eyes . The long vigil was coming to an end . The outline of the cave seaward began to take shape ; the light was growing upon the retreating tide .
Tregony stirred again and opened his eyes . Then he raised his head with a startled movement .
" Don't be alarmed , " she said , in soft voice , the day is breaking . "
He sat bolt upright and stared round him . " Where am It he began , then stopped abruptly . " , I remember now , " he went on , before she had time to reply .

" Ay , and he was not allowed , to live to tell the tale . ' " There must be a regular nest of them , " he said .
" Not so many of them now , I'm thinking , " she answered . " Jeth spoke of young Carleon being at the bottom of the sea . He did not think that you would live to tell the tale , and he did not know that I was near enough to overhear what he said . It is easy now to put two and two together . "
