Ross CHORAL SOCIETY . - The annual general meeting of the Ross Choral Society was held in the Lower Schoolroom on Thursday even- ing last , when Mr. J. H. Sharman presided There over a good attendance of members . was the usual election of officers , and Mr. Harold Crump , the hon . secretary , pre e ted his annual report . The accounts start with a debit balance of £ 1 17s . Od . , but that has now been turned into a credit balance of £ 9 8s . 7d . The report was adopted . Mr. C. L. Thursday last . The birds for sale , were the property of Mr A. F. M. Stevenson , Sollers- hope , near Ross , who is seeking a commission in the army and giving up the fancy . The 200 lots for sale consisted principally of single comb Rhode Island Reds , Blue Or- pington ducks , also spaniel bitch , Hebditch Incubator and three pedigree Blue Persian kittens . The highest price for a single bird ( Rhode Island Red cockerel ) was £ 1 16s . Od . which was secured by that well - known fancier Mr. Murray Linder , of Charlton Kings , Cheltenham . Pullets made up to 7s . each . ducks 7s . 6d . each , Persian kittens 5s . each , incubator 30s . , spaniel bitch 25s . , etc. , every lot finding a ready purchaser at highly satis- factory prices to the vendor . The sale was without doubt the most successful one of poultry held in the Ross district for many years past . Many well - known fanciers from Wolverhampton , Hereford , Gloucester , Mon- month , Cheltenham , and other parts were in attendance . JUMBLE SALE - Through the kindness a forethought of Miss Brunton , the hea mistress of the infants department of t Ross Council Schools , her teaching staff , a Mr. F. Bolton , a highly successful jum and rummage sale was held in the infa school on Tuesday afternoon , in aid of t local relief fund and the Belgium Refuge The various fancy , sweet and fruit stalls h been tastefully arranged in the main roo while the tea and jumble sections w There was arranged in the classrooms . very large crowd of people present at opening , which ceremony was performed Mrs. Evan Thomas , of Over - Ross . In brief but appropriate speech , Mrs. Thon was introduced by the Rev. J. W. Kett one of the Managers , and in declaring sale open Mrs. Tho nas spoke of the distr that had been caused in Belgium by the structive work of the Germans . - On motion of Mr. H. Llewellyn , Mrs. Thon was heartily thanked for her kindness opening the sale . - As soon as the sale opened , a brisk business was transacted . the many lady and gentlemen stall hold had quite a busy time in serving the anxi purchasers . Special mention must be m of the interest taken in the sale by the ents and the children , and the infants w alone brought into the exchequer well o £ 10 . Miss Brunton and her staff wish sincerely thank the many friends who s donations of money and also articles for sale . As a result , over £ 88 was realised the two funds , and still there are ma articles of clothing and other goods to sold . It is now proposed to hold a sale these things in the infants school on Sat day afternoon , at 4 o'clock . when it is ho that well over £ 40 will be realised ..
Belgium Before the War LECTURE AT THE SECONDARY SCHO A lantern lecture was given at the Sec dary School on Friday evening last by G. Embrey , of Gloucester in aid of the l fund for the Belgian refugees . The lect was entitled " Belgium before the W and was illustrated by over a hundred tern slides , most of which had been prep by the lecturer from his own photogr The pictures taken in the country . splendid , and the description of them g by Mr. Embrey was most graphic and in esting , and was interspersed by amu anecdotes . First the coast was visited Ostend and slankenberghe , then the in esting cities of Bruges , Ghent , Mali Brussels , Louvain , and Namur were v in turn . In each of these were shown tures of famous buildings , the most not of all at the present time being the n cathedral at Malines , now woefully batte and the wonderful and ill - fated Hote Ville at Louvain . From Namur the audi were conducted up the lovely River Meu Dinant , whose church has been so sadly crated , and the tour finished at Antwer whose cathedral some excellent pictures shown .
At the end of the lecture pictures of Kitchener , Sir John French , and other tish generals , and of Admiral Sir John coe were thrown ou the screen , and the turer made n eloent appeal to his ience for their generous support of the fugee Fund .
