Bussell Pike , while Mr. E. H. Soles gave a la loaf of bread . There was a good congre tion present , and the collection was tal on behalf of the Ross Cottage Hospital .. The service was conducted by the R A. H. Sayers , of Monmouth , who took a text Ecclesiastes 11 , 4 : " He that regard the clouds shall not reap . " He thou there was a lack of sufficient faith in world to - day , but God sent torch - bear even when the clouds were darkest , for " is light , and in Him is no darkness at al There must be some solace in the dark clouds , and when the clouds lifted a pr pect fairer than could be anticipated wo he seen . " God inspired men to look for t best . On the minds and hearts of all the present time were the clouds and sh ows of the great war , the great and terri ordeal through which we were passing . God would even use this terrible instrume of war as a means of future happiness wh could never have been horn without Right must inevitably triumph , and should find later that the dark clouds w hover us to - day had their birth in the s The services were continued on Sunda when the minister , the Rer . W A. Powic conducted the services , assisted by Mr. W. Hill . col . Middleton on the Wa GERMAN INCARNATE FIENDS . Colonel O. R. Middleton , Chairman of t Herefordshire Territorial Association , ga a lecture on the war at the Ross Seconds School on Friday evening . There was a ve good attendance , and a small charge w made for admission , the proceeds of whi were devoted to the fund for the relief the Belgian refugees , of which Mr. A. Barker has kindly undertaken the secretar duties . Previous to the lecture the sche children sang several patriotic songs . men t W grea Colonel O. R. Middleton said this w the largest war that had ever taken pla because there were more men engaged th had ever been known in previous battle in fact the immensity of the number . engaged almost revolutionised strategy and tactics employed in ordina warfare . He believed the Germans had be looking forward to this war for years , if they succeeded in winning all other pow would be subservient to Germany . this object in view they had organised , army of 6,000,000 soldiers , and had be building a fleet of warships which th thought would be capable of defeating E land . and so gain the supremacy of the s and become the commercial country of t world . This had been for years the am tion of German merchantmen , and for yea Germany had been toasting " the day Their object had first of all been to def France , then Russia , then England . Ma times he had spoken from platforms in R of the inevitable war with Germany . he knew that many people said : " W nonsense the Colonel does talk ! " * tinning the Colonel went on to speak the organisation of the German force the army , the formidable navy . the f of dirgibles , from which it might be poss to drop 400 hombs on London at any ti Almost more than anything Germany we ed colonies . particularly Morocco , whe in the south , the Atlas Mountains w full of mineral wealth which they wan to exploit . This was only one of their bitions . But Germany had not succee in defeating the French , and were not lik to with the British forces aiding th French friends . After 1870 the Fre fortresses the frontier were on strengthened . Belgium , unfortunately , not possess such strong fortresses on frontier . and therefore German's intent -and she had built her railways and ma other preparations with that , object- always been to invade Belgium to get it France . They made overtures to Engla to keep us out of the present war , h thank goodness , our politicians - and th could do no other - had not listened to t overtures of the hully of Europe . " the beginning of July stores were broug nn hy Germany to the Belgium frontier . Germany had not all along had any resp for their share of the neutrality of Belgi They all knew what had taken place Belgium and France . Unfortunately E land had such a small force in the fie They could only put about 150.000 th at present , which was a mere handful co pared with 5.000.000 , but there were T other troons like them ( applause ) . were the finest soldiers in the world , a never knew when they were hesten . a they all admired the way they fought . pecially at the battle of Mons where , it not been for the great generalship General French and General Smith - Dorri the British forces would have suffered ribly ( applause ) . As it was they lost he lv , his own regiment losing the colonel six officers . The art of strategy place a greater number of men at the no of contact than your adversary , and lines of communication - the lines behind army which hronght up the food , amm tion , and stores - was the most import factor of warfare , for when the lines w cut the enemy was done . If the , Allies had 150,000 or 200,000 men they could h sent from Ostend . they would have bro the German lines and surrounded Kluck's corps . Germany , with all her in the field . was bound to get stale hut , British , with the Territorials - which w a good force - and the 500,000 heing trained . had every reason to he co dent of the result , but he hoped they we not sign for pence until they reached Be ( hear , hear ) . How they would do it he not know , for they would have difficult w in crossing the Rhine . Col. Middleton ferred to the troops from India . who w horn fighters : and to the successful op tion of the Russians in Prussis and st of the condition of Belgium at the pre time - the ruination of farms , homes , old historical buildings . the murder of wo and children . committed with no other iect than devilry . These atrocities blackened the history of the German nat whose soldiers had become nothing than incarnate fiends . He was glad to that in Ross they had made provision to ceive 49 Belgian refugees , and he knew would receive the hospitality they deser Mr. Barker pronosed a hearty vote thanks to Col. Middleton , which Mr. H Blake seconded , and the National Ant concluded the gathering . now was HEREFORDSHIRE NATIONA RESERVE . ROSS COMPANIES .
