HE WEEK'S GARDENING .
GETABLES AND FRUIT .
Rhubarb needs an abundance of plant food , a thick mulch of half - rotted manure ght now to be placed . between the rows of barb growing in heavy soil to be dug in . e crowns of early sorts should be covered
h a thick layer of dry litter and leaves . ese , of course , should be renewed as often they are seen to become sodden and cayed by the weather .
Rhubarb is best planted on a border facing ath , south - east , or south - west , while the 1 is in a dry condition . If very early sticks required the ground should have a gentle pe . When preparing the soil , trench it te 3ft . deep . Mix well - rotted manure with surface portion of the soil down to a
oth of 15in . Put in the clumps singly 8ft . art in rows 8ft . 6in . asunder , and when all planted the surface should be covered th half - rotted , littery manure . Overcrowd-
is a common error , and should be avoided .
During winter and early spring fresh green nt is scarce , although the provision of a pply during the winter and early spring is easy matter . Take up pieces of the matted ots after the plants have died down , and ant them closely in a bed or wide box of ht , rich soil . Give a good watering and that adequate moisture is always pro-
led , and there will soon be plenty of green bots to cut .
Fruit of late varieties should be allowed to main on the trees till the fruit comes off sily when the apple or pear is lifted and en a slight twist . Care should be taken
to break off the young fruit buds at the se of the stalk , and , of course , fruit should ver be gathered by shaking the tree or her violent method . Fruit which is to be
ot must be . gathered into a basket , prefer-
ly lined with some soft material , such as biece of cloth , to prevent bruising . Diseased d damaged fruit should be placed in a parate basket .
The soil around fruit - trees which have ocen-
ed their positions for a number of years be
mes exhausted , and is a frequent cause of ple and pear trees failing to bear satisfac ry crops . They can frequently be restored usefulness by renewing the soil about their ots , and now is the time to undertake such ork . Remove the old soil carefully so as to oid injuring the roots unnecessarily , and re-
ace it with the best loam obtainable . It i
t advisable to add manure to the soil , but
ht mulching would be of assistance , and ring the summer manure water may be ely given .
