A considerable crowd had gathered in front of Burwood . They had come uninvited , urged by some impulse they could neither ex- plain nor understand . The first - comers had entered the grounds diffidently and nervously the others , seeing their neighbours in front of them , marched boldly in . They stood in a shifting mass in front of the house , and stared at the windows and at the closed door . For silent and the most part they were con- strained . but their , faces were sullen and hard , and their eyes . full of a fierce defiance John Trefusis might be a rich man , and live in a big house , but such things as had taken place of late under his roof had become a public scandal and menace . The good name of St. Olaves was seriously threatened . Some kind of explanation was due to them . they wanted to know who the culprit was . They were in a mood that might lead to mischief at any moment - eager to act upon any hint or suggestion . A bold leader could have got them to do anything , even to batter- ing in the door and windows or setting fire to the house . May Trefusis , from behind the curtain , saw the crowd gathering , and drew back afraid .. She knew their superstitious nature : under- stood the wild , unreasoning fierceness of their Celtic temper . When aroused by fear or passion they were capable of anything . Reason would avail nothing with a crowd swayed by emotion . She saw by the way they clutched their hands , and by the sullen light in their eyes , that they wanted to do some- thing : their impotent inactivity irritated them - they wanted scapegoat . Anyone would do . Any Jonah would be good enough -or bad enough - to cast into the sea . These people had loved her in the days and years gone by , had constituted her their queen , would have risked their lives for her at any moment . Now they would tear her to pieces if they could get at her , and all be- cause a fear had taken possession of them that she had in her hands the power of life and death . 8 Fortunately , no one had in his mind any clear conception of what ought to be done , and no one had sufficient courage to con- stitute himself a leader . So they stood , inar- ticulate and motionless , $ mass of in- flammable material waiting for the match to be applied . The witch and Dr. Tregony came upon the scene unobserved , for every face was turned towards the house . Then a lad at the back of the crowd heard the crunching of gravel be- hind him , and , turning suddenly , saw the drenched , mud - stained , and bedraggled pair . In a moment his shrill , clear voice rang out : " Here they be ! Here's the doctor- here's the witch - I say " but what he said or meant to say will never be known . The The crowd swung round as one man . hard , set faces relaxed as if by magic , and a great shout went up that could be heard a mile away . The witch and Tregony came steadily on without a pause , the latter leaning heavily on Molly's shoulder . The crowd gave way in an instant , leaving a wide passage for them . Then they stopped , and Molly spoke . " You can go home quietly now , " she said . " We've unravelled the riddle , and we know the man who shot the doctor , and , what is more , we've got him safe . " Another shout arose at this fierce and triumphant . Then someone called : " Is he a St. Olaves man . " " He ended in hooting and uproar . Tell us all about it ? a dozen voices cried . " Not now , " she answered . " Can't you see that Dr. Tregony is ill and exhausted " The next moment the door of the house was thrown open , and with a glad cry May Tre- fusis rushed out , and , dropping on her knees , she caught Tregony about the legs , and then burst into a paroxysm of weeping . is , " she answered , and the shout " So ho ! " said the witch to herself , " this is how the land lies , is it ? And I have pro- mised Ned Nankivel " The action was momentary , and few saw it . When the crowd looked May was kneeling with head bent and face hidden in her hande , sobbing with unrestrained emotion . Tregony was almost too far spent to notice anything . He was like one in a dream , and nothing seemed real to him . Dr. Polwhele and Jago came close upon the heels of May , and then the crowd broke up in confusion . Everyone talked to everyone else . To them the mystery was almost as great as ever . Where had the doctor been ? How did he get out of the house when the door was bolted ? Where did he meet Molly Udy ? What had they discovered ? Who was the man that shot the doctor ? On one point , however , their minds were relieved the doctor was alive . For the mo- ment that was enough . They could breathe freely again . The cloud was fifted . The hor- rible fear that had dominated them so long was dispersed . May Trefusis was an angel . In the confusion Molly and Tregony passed into the house followed by May , Dr. Pol- whele , and Jago . Tregony almost collapsed " in the hall , and Dr. Polwhele and Jago helped him upstairs to the bathroom , and ten minutes later they carried him to the nearest . bedroom , which happened to be May's , and laid him between the soft , scented sheets . Jago left Dr. Polwhele with his patient and went off to the servants ' quarters to in- terview the witch . He had to wait some time , however , but in due course Molly appeared clad in garments of various styles and sizes , but all having the supreme merit that they were dry and warm . " Now , " said Jago , in his most professional style , tell me what you have discovered , and how . " . " It was all pure accident on my part , " she said , quietly , and I'll tell you how it came Jago listened with his elbow on the arm of the chair and his chin resting in the cup of his hand . He refrained from interrupting her , though once or twice he raised his head suddenly , as if about to speak . Molly told her story straightforwardly , and without unneces sary detail , and making as little as possible of what she had done , Meanwhile , under Dr. Polwhele's ministra tions , Tregony had recovered considerably , and was able to give his old friend a fairly succinct account of the part he had played in the little drama . Dr. Polwhele was profoundly interested , and far more excited than he cared to admit , but he was by no means surprised to learn that smuggling was still being carried on , and on a fairly extensive scale . On the landing he met Jago , who was bubbling over with excitement and impati- I've just had all the story from the witch ! " he exclaimed , speaking rapidly and excitedly . " A most wonderful story . They've left Jeth Main in a cave . There's a secret passage from the library- ence . " So I've learnt from Tregony , " the doctor interrupted . " Come with me to Mr. Tre- fusis's room , and we'll hear what he suggests . I can't allow Tregony to leave his bed for the present . " John Trefusis did not hesitate a second . " If the secret of the panel can't be dis- covered , " he said , " then the wainscoting must be ripped from the wall , and let there be no delay about it . If you'll allow me to get up , doctor , I'll come down and superintend it myself . " " How do you feel ? " Now that the load is off " Heaps better . my mind I feel all right again . " The doctor sat down by his side and felt his pulse . " Very good , " he said . " If you promise not to excite yourself you may get up . " Jago hurried downstairs and sent off & messenger to fetch all his men . comes John Half an hour later the library presented the appearance of being crowded , but nobody could discover the secret of the panel . " It was easy to give the order , but by no means easy to rip the stout wainscotting from the wall . The foreigners whom old Amos Trefusie had employed had done their work well . There was not a cranny that would admit the keen edge of a chisel . The oak had become hardened by time almost to the #F consistency of iron . 47 Strong hands , however , were working with a will . Stout wedges were driven in from the top , and gradually a great slab of panelling was unloosed . It fell away at length , reveal ing a narrow bricked tunnel , in which was built a stout oaken door , which stood open . The back of the door was rough and uneven , like a piece of rock , and might easily have been mistaken for such , so cleverly had the work been done . Beyond the rock was a narrow fissure of considerable height . Jago led the way with a lighted candle and a big ball of white worsted , the end of which he made fast to the leg of one of the library chairs . He was frightfully nervous , as any one could , see , though he took considerable pains to conceal it . Three of his mates followed him in single file . They walked slowly , Jago unrolling the worsted as he went . They came out into the cave at length , and found Jeth lying in the darkness in B state of almost complete collapse . They un- trussed him as quickly as possible , and raised him to a sitting posture . There was no fear of his doing mischief or trying to run away . " Gimme a drink , " was his one request , and they obliged him with as strong a dose of brandy and water as they thought was good for him . THE ROSS GAZETTE THURSDAY , OCTOBER 22 , 1914 . But she seemed less frank and transparent . She rarely met his eyes , and when she came into his room she did so diffidently and shyly . He was not aware until the end of the second day that he was occupying her room , and the knowledge for the moment covered him with confusion . " What a confounded nuisance you must think me , " he said , a little petulantly . " I do apologise most sincerely . I seem to be always getting in somebody's way . " " You are not in the way at all , " she said , way with averted eyes , " and you are incon- veniencing no one . " " It's kind of you to say so , " he answered , moodily , and really and truly I'm pro foundly grateful . And yet I can't really help it I feel profoundly humiliated . I hate being forced upon people willy - nilly . " " I am not aware that anyone forced you upon us , " she answered . Not willingly , perhaps , but I think Pol- whele might have taken me back to my own dige . " You regret being here ! " " I don't like being burden to people , and you have done so much for me- " Perhaps you would rather I did not come to see you , but Mrs. Luny- " " No , no ! Mrs. Luny may be a good Chris- tian and an excellent woman , but as a nurse and he shrugged his shoulders . The conversation quickly tapered out into silence , and when May left the room she felt as though a blank wall had been raised be- tween them . " Does he think I am too forward , I won- der , " she said to herself , " that I have thrown myself in his way ? ” and her cheeks flamed crimson . " Oh , I ought not to have lost control of myself yesterday morning ; and , of course , he noticed it . I really will be more careful . " She did not wait upon him with less assiduity than before , but her manner became more and more formal and restrained , and conversation was carried on with increasing difficulty . He fretted and fumed over the change , and put upon it the worst possible . construction . Love may have remarkably good eyesight , and generally has , in spite of what ' people say to the contrary . He had been away from St. Olaves during all the xcitement away on business , he told May and her father ; but ten days of business had proved too much for him . He was not so fully recovered as he had imagined ; and his doctor as well as his partnere had insisted that he should take a longer rest . He certainly did not look so well as when he went away . His cheeks were pale , and his eyes had a look of pain in them . " You must remain here all the winter , " " The May said to him , sympathetically . Atlantic breezes will put new life into you . " He smiled wistfully into her eyes , and then changed the subject of conversation , and May liked him all the more , because he re- fused to talk about his own ailments . John Trefusis , who had kept all his wife's relations at arm's length for more than twenty years , relented a little . He really had no fault to find with this young man . He had exceedingly pleasant manners , and did not appear to be a self - seeker in any degree - and Bo , in a moment of generosity , invited him to spend a few days at Burwood . But Ned was much too wily for that . He would not hear of it . He was the last man in the world to presume on a remote relationship . No , no , he would not trespass on good nature . sides , he was exceedingly comfortable at the Three Pilchards . He could desire nothing better , but , if he might , he would drop in to tea occasionally , and as the evenings were now at their longest - he would like some- times to in of an evening for a quiet chat and a smoke . Be- It was all done in the best possible taste and with many expressions of grateful appre- ciation , and with every evidence of straight- forwardness sincerity . and There was nothing fulsome in Ned's thanks . He was careful never to overdo anything . Ned felt that his progress was quite satis- factory . He had no longer any occasion to consult Molly Udy : She had done all that she could do . The matter was now entirely in his own hands . His only concern was a financial one , and that certainly gave him a good deal of anxiety . The problem of how to live upon nothing was by no means easy , even in such an inexpensive place as St. Olaves . Necessity , however , sharpens a man's wits , and is sometimes the parent of invention . Ned spent most of his time in working out schemes for the transference of money from other people's pockets to his own . What is now known as the confidence trick was then in its infancy , and Ned was certainly one of the pioneers of that industry . It had to be reckoned , however , as one of the dangerous callings , " and Ned was afraid to practise it in the neighbourhood of St. Olaves . The tunnel was still exposed , the wains cotting being propped against the wall . Sir Ralph eyed the dark hole with much interest , then muttered : " Frank was mad to riak his life in such a trap . " " If you wish to go down into the cave I will ask my gardener to take you , ” John said , quietly . " She will be all the more ready to wipe out the insult by marrying another man ! " " I don't see why . " " You don't understand the workings of a woman's mind . A jilted woman is always the more ready to take up with another man just to show her independence , and to show that she has not broken her heart over the affair 3 to show other women that she is not depend- ent on any one man .
