The Speaker took as the basis of his re- marks two pictures from the Old Testament . The first was in the time of Moses , when during the . journey from Egypt they were attacked by the Amalekites , and Moses sent Joshua against the enemy , and he himself

The other picture represented the prophet Elisha surrounded by the army of the King of Syria , so that his servant exclaimed in despair , Alas , Master , how shall we do ? " The prophet , however , prayed to God that he would open the young man's eyes that he might see , and he saw that the mountain was full of horses and chariots of fire round about Elisha . The lessons which the speaker drew from these pictures were that just as the Israelites were opposed by enemies whom they were commanded by God to destroy . so we in the journey of life were opposed hy the powers of evil , which strove to take pos- session of us body and soul ; that like Moses of old we must hold up our hands in prayer to God , from whom alone we could derive help , and strength for the conflict ; that further . if our spiritual eyes were open , if our faith was not so dim and clouded , we should see around us the army of God ready to help us , and should realise that those that be with us are more than those that be with
them , that the forces of good , that is of God our side , and that these were stronger than the former powers of evil . In

WHAT THE SOCIETY IS DOING DURIN THE WAR .
The cld Town Hall , Ross , was on Monda evening well filled with sympathisers an supporters of the Ross Branch of the Britis and Foreign Bible Society , on the occasio of its annual meeting . W Kettle Baptist ) , apologising for his absen through a long standing engagement .
After the meeting had been opened by th singing of God our help in ages past , and prayers by the Rector , the Rev. W. POWICKE , en behalf of Miss Southall , th hon . secretary of the branch , presented th report , which showed an income for the ye of £ 16 17s . ed . , including £ 3 from the co lection at the public meeting ; £ 4 12s . fro Mrs. Horton's district ; £ 3 14s . from M Herbert's district ; £ 1 1s . from Mrs. Car district ; 16s . 6d . from Mrs. Henry Blak district ; and 14s . 4d . from the Broad - stre district . The amounts collected in the box were : Mrs. Brown £ 1 2s ; Mrs. Edwa Bliss 16s . 3d .; Miss Emily Blake 10s . ( t years ) ; Miss H. Blake 6s . 7d .; and Mr. Blake 4s . 10d . The expenses came to 17s . 6 leaving £ 16 , which was sent up to the Pare Society . Since the formation of the R branch the sum of £ 1,814 14s . 10d . h been contributed to this society . Continui Mr. Powicke said the amount last year d not reach the sum given in the previo year : But there was an explanation f that . In ene district the collection was u avoidably not completed , whilst there was balance in hand of 18s . last year which d not appear on this occasion . There was al missing Mr. Pernard's subscription of £ 1 1 and although they had not received that the Ross fund , there was no doubt Mr. Be nard would give that in the district , which he now resided . The collection la year was 13s . 6d . less than before but hoped on this occasion they would make th up ( applause ) .
The CHAIRMAN , in his opening remar said they met there at a time when pract ally all their thoughts were directed to tremendous struggle which was now goi on in Northern France and Belgium . seemed strange , however , that while th thoughts were taken up with the terr warfare that they should be able to meet that quiet little town as they had met many and many a year before to consi the greatest of all subjects , viz . , the sub of the spreading of the knowledge of Proceeding , by means of His Word . Chairman sail that the greatest reason he always supported the British and Fore Bible Society was because of the great un ing power it had upon all Christian peo no matter what their difference or dist tion was in their creed or belief . Unfor nately owing to different causes there wa considerable difference of opinion which sh ed itself outside the meeting of the B Society . But he hoped the day might s -come when all Christian people would be united outside as well as in the interior u which they elieved all Christian people joyed . That was one of the greatest rea why they should all do their best to sup this society . Many of them prayed for day , and which in God's time would brought about ( applause ) .
The Rev. EW . E. Hudgell , in the co of a most fluent and educative add spoke of the vastly important work the ish and Foreign Bible Society was doin the translating of the Scriptures into various languages in order that the p might become readers of God's Word i lands . He also deal at some length wit steps the society had taken in circula the New Testament among the soldiers sailors now engaged in this horrible war cluding the English , French , Belgians , sians , and even the German prisoners in detention camps . They had also rece many letters thanking the society for Testaments , and saying how grateful the were for the looks , and in many places men were most eager to secure one . Mr. HENRY SOUTHALL . also added testimony to the work of the society , expressed is thanks to the deputation his splendid address , one of he finest he ever heard at their meetings during many years he had heen connected wit society .
A hymn , cellection , and the Benedi closed the meeting .
