Matthews ( sisters of the bride ) , and Mrs. Townsend ; and Miss Townsend . - INTERESTING CEREMONY AT FORDHAM . Considerable interest was manifested in the marriage of Mr. Geoffrey Tom Matthews , of Tranmore , Birkenhead , the youngest son of Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Matthews , of Galen Lodge , Ashfield , Ross , and Miss Muriel Ivy Townsend , the sixth daughter of the late Mr. Charles Townsend , and of Mrs. Towns- end , of the Shrublands , Fordham , the bride being one of the most popular members of a family who have , for many years , been held in high esteem in the Fordham district . The Rev. A. W. Ivatt , M.A. , Vicar of the parish , officiated , assisted by the Rev. F. L. Astbury , M.A. , of St. Mary's , Bury St. Ed- munds ( a friend of the bride's family ) . The sanctuary and chancel steps were adorned with lovely palms , white chrysanthemums , etc. , from Charles Townsend's nurseries . Long before the time fixed for the cere- mony , people from far and near had begun to assemble at the church , and the large con- gregation included many of the leading resi- dents in the district . The service was fully choral , Mr. C. J. Harold Shann , organist of the cathedral church of St. James ' at Bury St. Edmunds , presiding at the organ , and the choir being in attendance . While the guests were assembling , Mr. Shann play- ed a " Cantilena Nuptiale " by Theo . Dubois , a " Legende " by Torjussen , and Sir Edward Elgar's " Salut d'Amour . " Mrs. W. A. Newton ( aunt of the bride ) and Mr. Newton . The bridal party also included | several members of the bridegroom's family . The service began with the hymn , " The voice that breathed o'er Eden . " The Deus Misereatur ( Psalm LXVII ) was chanted to Longhurst's setting , and the address was fol- lowed by the hymn , " O perfect love . " Dur- ing the signing of the register , " The promise of life " ( Cowen ) was finely sung by Miss Annie Townsend ( sister of the bride ) ; and the bridal party left the church to the trium- phal strains of Mendelssohn's Wedding March . After the ceremony , a reception was given by Mrs. Townsend at Shrublands , the guests numbering over 50. The reception rooms had been exquisitely decorated with flowers and pot plants by the firm's staff . Later in the day the happy couple motored to Cambridge , en route for London , the bride wearing a ponyskin coat over her travelling costume . The bridal party travelled to and from the church in motor cars ( decorated with white ribbons , and with small flags on the bonnet ) supplied by Mr. C. W. Stevens , of the Rous Garage , Newmarket . The bride's and brides- maid's costumes were supplied by Harrods . A large number of handsome and valuable presents were received . A QUESTION OF EVIDENCE . IMPORTANT ROSS DECISION . Ross inhabitants have decided that the word of a neighbour is far more convincing than the doubtful utterances of people in distant towns . The following is a case in point , and truth is breathed in every line . Ross Board of Guardians . House Committee , which he ( Col. Middleton ) WITHOUT A HEAD NURSE . EXTRA WINTER RELIEF GRANTED . The need for some such precaution as this was discussed the other day at a local Cham- ber of Agriculture . The secretary reported that a case had been brought before the coun- cil by a member who , in response to an ad- vertisement , bought twenty tons of lime , An application for an increase in her salary which upon receipt he had analysed . From CO - OPERATIVE BACON FACTORIES ' PROGRESS . The members and management of the St. Edmundsbury Co - operative Bacon Factory , Limited , are to be congratulated on the fac- tory's excellent progress . To the end of September the loss made in 1912 and 1913 , viz . , £ 1,785 14s . 9d . , had been cleared off , and in addition a profit of about £ 800 had been made . At the general meeting one of the directors said : The reason that we have been able to clear off the loss and make a profit is partly owing to the war and to the much larger kill Although the kills for the three months July , August , and , September were double our ordi- nary kills , the pigs had to be bought from various sources , and were not all pigs sent in by members : This to my mind is a wrong policy . The killings to the end of September , 1914 , have averaged 353 per week , against 203 in 1913 ; but during the month of October we have been obliged to lower our prices owing to the extraordinary quantities of Danish , Swedish , and Dutch bacon on our markets . The kills in Denmark were from 10,000 to 18,000 per week more than the corresponding weeks of October last year , and it has knocked the wholesale price of bacon down at least 16s . per cwt in a month . " To the end of July the Dunmow Flitch Bacon Company , Limited , for the year made a trading profit of £ 497 7s . 6d . After pay ment to bankers for interest on overdraft £ 318 195 and writing off one - tenth cost of siding £ 44 5s . 3d . , the net profit for the year was £ 134 8s . 3d . , which , deducted from the debit balance on August 1st , 1913 , £ 2,133 18s . 5d . , leaves a debit balance of £ 1,999 15s . 2d . Owing to the large debit balance the directors decided to forego their fees for the year . The continued scarcity , of pigs through- out the country , and consequent high prices , militated very seriously against the operations of the company . During the year 11,583 pigs were killed , against 13,849 in the previous year . • A PIG FATTENING EXPERIMENT . An experiment has recently been carried out to compare the value of oat milling offals The oat and barley meal for fattening pigs . Mrs. E. The report as presented was adopted . CONCERNING THE HOUSE . Col. MIDDLETON , Chairman of the House Committee , in giving the report , said they had inserted the house and found every- thing satisfactory . The reports of various officers had heen laid before the committee and dealt with . He also had to report that Head Nurse Mavall had left the services of the Board on Nov. 14th , and that they had question of granting extra winter relief to not been able to secure a new nurse .
