that the Germans made themselves known . The conflict was really fearful for a time . Eight other fellows and myself formed the gun's crew in the lighter , and it was at this place where I had my first taste of shell . The HOW PTE . For tunatley I did not get touched , but three young fellows close by me went under , and the poor nigger next to me had his head blown to atoms . How I got through I don't know , but I kept loading the gun as my part of the business . I also carried on the work with a rifle , and then did not get a scratch myself , thank God . Yet I can assure you I don't wish to get so near to their fire again . Nevertheless we won in the end , and I am glad to say this little colony is now no longer German . For my own part I wish the war was over , then we might have a chance to get home for Xmas . But no such luck . I shall have to spend my sixth Xmas with the Navy . If I do not have a chance to write again I will now wish you all at home A Happy Xmas , ' hoping to be amongst you all again soon . I know
Mrs. Griffiths , wife of the late Pte . T. Griffiths , who resides in Brookend - street , Ross , has received a letter from a chum of her late husband's , giving particulars of how he met his death . Pte . T. Griffiths was at tached to the 2nd Gloucesters , and he left this country in September last . Letters were received from him until after the battle of Marne , through which he passed . Pte . Al- bert Barnfield , of the 1st Gloucesters , who was with Griffiths at the time , writes as
follows : -
" Tom got killed whilst he was resting at a farmhouse . While they were in one of the rooms a shell from one of the enemy's big guns was thrown right into the house , right and several others wounded . Pte . those who were Griffiths was killed , and he was burried almost at once .

them ! There is one thing about which I should like to tell you . About a mile behind the German trenches there stood a large white house , and the German staff officers were just sitting down to lunch when one of our airmen got wind of it . Our gunners were given the signal , a shell came , and up went the blooming lot ! "
A LONG WAY FROM BERLIN . Writing home from the front to his wife and children , who reside at Bromsash , near Ross , Gunner W. West , of the Royal Field
Artillery , says :
" Thanks for letter and photo . It is very good . I hope you and the little ones are still quite well , I am better now than what I have been this last day or so . My knee has been bad , and I could hardly walk about . But , thank God , we are now down from the firing line , having a rest . We are having winter out here with snow and severe frost .
