RECOGNITION BY WAR OFFICE . The enthusiasm of the members of the above corps is well maintained , although owing to pressure of business the attendances at the parades have not been quite so large . The committee selected to manage the affairs of the corps met on Friday evening , when Mr. E. W. Strong was added to represent the Weston side . The suggested regulations of the War Office were considered , and the recommendation of the Central Association to await the result of their negotiations with the officials at headquarters was adopted . In view of the grent interest aroused by the volunteer movement throughout the king- dom , and the recognition of the force as a probable factor in defence against invasion . the committee strongly urge all who can give a satisfactory reason for not joining the re- gular forces to at once become members of this corps .
The objects are : -
( 1 ) To encourage recruits for the Regular , and Territorial Army .
( 2 ) To encourage men not of age for services in the ranks , or otherwise disqualified for service , to Drill and learn the ele ments of Musketry in their spare time . ( 3 ) To co - ordinate all existing organisa- tions with similar obiects and to promote uniformity in their rules and regulations . OUTLINE OF SCHEME . Recent events have shown that the greater part of the manhood of the nation may he suddenly called unon to mobilise for its de- fence . This mobilisation is being dealt hy the Military Authorities , and with it we have nothing to do except to induce as many eligible men to join as we can .
There is , however , a large residue who can- not join it on account of age or for other reasons . At present this residue , which in a greater national emergency could supply many men who would make useful soldiers for internal defence or defence of their own . hearths and homes , has no Military training whatsoever . and is therefore useless for this purpose . Our object is to induce as many ) men as possible to attain the modified train- ing necessary , which they , can do in their spare time and by performing some three Drills per week . There is . moreover , the further reason why they should do this : there are many men who , while unable to join the Army for various good reasons at present , would the willing to do so in any grave national emergency . such as invasion . when every fit man would he required no matter what his private affairs might dictate . Walter Scott's School .
A DELIGHTFUL ENTERTAINMENT . The Lower Schoolroom , Ross , was on Tues- day evening filled to overflowing by a very appreciative audience on the occasion of a school concert given entirely by the scholars attending the Walter Scotts School , of which Mr. and Mrs. H. S. Cooper are the Master and Mistress . The Rev. R. T. A. Money- Kyrle , Rector , presided , and during the in- terval he made a few most interesting re- marks . The programme , which comprised 16 items , was a marvellous one , and the man- ner in which the children acquitted ' them- selves in every particular , not only delighted . the parents and friends present , but also re- flected on the wonderful care taken in the training of the younger as well as the older scholars . All the items were exceptionally well rendered , and although some were par ticularly pleasing to the audience , and gain- ed well - merited encores , it would be invidions on our part to individualise , for each and all of the many iuvenile performers did so well . A Kind Friend " sent 140 buns for distri- bution among the children during the inter- val , while a large basket of apples from Mr. Dowding found great favour with the chil- dren at the close .
During the interval . the RECTOR made a short speech , in which he said ther must certainly thank both Mr. and Mrs. Cooper . and the boys and girls for the great musical treat they had given them that evening . It was indeed brilliant thought on the part . of Mr. and Mrs. Cooper , to give them this concert , for it gave the parents of the scholars an opportunity of coming together and seeing for themselves what their bors and girls were heing taught in the school . They always said that the education given in the Walter Scott's School was the best elementary education that could be provided But in Ross or anywhere else ( applause ) . the effort that evening was only a very small part of what the scholars were really able to accomplish , and he was perfectly certain that the parents ought to be only too glad that their children have the chance of coming under the teaching of Mr. and . Mrs. Cooper ( applause ) . He was glad . too . that the non - foundation scholars were there to take part in the programme , for it was a great boon to many parents that they were able for their children to share in the splen- did education given at the Walter Scott's School ( applause ) . This idea was only in- augurated a few years ago , and is certainly was greatly appreciated , or there would not be such keen competition to get private scholars into the few places that were open in the school for them ( applause ) .
Mr. COOPER thanked the parents for their kind attendance , the kind friends for the buns , Mr. Dowding for apples , and the Rector for the loan of the Schoolroom . It was a pleasure to both Mrs. Cooner and him- self and the children to give that concert .. and next year he hoped there would be quite as large an attendance .
