LET GOOD DEEDS BANISH CARE Christmas festivities this year will be held under the shadow of war , but we are urged to carry on business as usual as far as cir- cumstances permit . Shopping In Ross . HOW ROSS OATERS FOR EVERYONE . There will be far greater enjoyment in these troublous days for those who shop in their own town , and thus help to make somewhat lighter the burden of a neighbour- ly and obliging tradesman , who may be anxiously contemplating a serious reduction of trade caused by the war . Many trades- men of Ross nave made sacrifices by send- ing their sons and assistants to the war , and in consequence have had to work long hours to keep things going . Every effort , is being made to meet the demands for wages , rent , rates , and increasing taxes , whilst generous support has been given to the many appeals for the various War Funds . It is on the merits of their goods , how- ever , that ever , that the Ross Trader relies for secur- ing and retaining the custom of our readers . A little time spent in a visit to the shops of the town will cause a surprise to some , no doubt , for they will find an immense variety of goods displayed behind the modest ex- The seasonable gift will help to banish care and anxiety from many a home , and therefore we urge our readers to open rather than close their purse strings during the next few weeks . Indeed , this year we must all realise more fully the meaning of Christmas - " Goodwill to all men , " by endeavouring to bring good cheer to all around us .. In the midst of their good works , readers should not forget that our local traders have suffered through the war some of them severely . They will do a double kindness interiors of our local stores . The prices , too , purchasing Xmas presents in their own town . We know that Ross tradesmen are willing and able to supply goods of a quality and price that will compare favourably with any town in the country , and readers will have no regrets if they spend their money in their own neighbourhood . are almost invariably very reasonable , whilst the quality een always be relied upon . For the benefit of readers , we are making a tour of inspection , and give below a few particulars of some of the more striking lines to be found in the shops and showrooms of our advertisers . The war has provided the most convincing AT BANNISTER AND CO.'S : argument possible for us to support home trade . In this hour of direst need , Great Britain turns to the manufacturers to , equip . her immense forces with clothing , arms , ships , transports , medicines , and the myriad things required by the mammoth armies of the present day . Ross provides for our army much agricul- tural produce ; whilst this important industry is comparatively prosperous we must not for- get the tradesman who supplies our many re- quirements , and is always anxious to study our convenience in times of prosperity . Our large manufacturers concentrate all their energies and resources on producing goods at the lowest cost , and they depend entirely upon the retailer to distribute their manufactures . He is therefore an important part of the commercial machinery of the country , a local ratepayer , a generous sub- scriber to all local appeals for charity and other purposes , so that he fully deserves the fullest support of the community . The local trader has many advantages in his favour . He relies on the continued sup- port of his ustomers , and therefore must not attempt to supply inferior goods , or he will soon ruin his trade . He is able to study the requirements of his clients , and is therefore in a position to stock the particu- lar class of poods needed . Although he may not keep a large stock , he can quickly obtain goods on approval , which he is willing to sell at a smaller percentage of profit for a quick turnover . In short the local trader is : - A substantial ratepayer . A subscriber to local charities and sports . An employer of local labour . A convenience to many , a boon to all . And this old family tradition is certainly being upheld by Mr. Debenham , of Ross , a nephew of Mr. Arthur Debenham , for a glance at his windows in Gloucester - road will soon convince the most fastidious that his work as a photo- grapher is par excellent , while his ar- tistic style is of the best .
