The enthusiasm of the members of the above corps is well maintained , although owing to pressure of business the attendances at the parades have not been quite so large . The committee selected to manage the affairs of the corps met on Friday evening , when Mr. E. W. Strong was added to represent the Weston side . The suggested regulations of the War Office were considered , and the recommendation of the Central Association to await the result of their negotiations with the officials at headquarters was adopted . In view of the great interest aroused by the volunteer movement throughout the king- dom , and the recognition of the force as a probable factor in defence against invasion , the committee strongly urge all who can give a satisfactory reason for not joining the re- gular forces to at once become members of this corps . The objects are : - and Territorial Army . Soldiers to Visit Ross . PREPARING A HEARTY WELCOME . MEN TO BE ENTERTAINED . The projected visit of the Herefordshire men of the Royal Army Medical Corps to Ross will take place on Monday next , Dec. 21st . The first body of Troops to visit us since the departure of B Company on that sunny day in August will be the men whose onerous and noble duty it will be to succour the wounded on the field of battle . Under Dr. A. J. Campbell , of Ross , now Lieut . Campbell , the men of this company of the R.A.M.C. have made splendid progress in training for their most important duties , and present a very smart and soldierlike appear ance . ( 3 ) To co - ordinate all existing organisa- tions with similar obiects and to promote uniformity in their rules and regulations . OUTLINE OF SCHEME . Recent events have shown that the greater part of the manhood of the nation may be suddenly called upon to mobilise for its de- fence . This mobilisation is being dealt by the Military Authorities , and with it we have nothing to do except to induce as many eligible men to join as we can . The visit will give us a chance to express our admiration for the men who have given up their all to answer the call of King and Country . Other towns are preparing a gen- erous welcome for the men who are on a route march through the county , and Ross will never allow itself to be outdone in such a case . A committee is arranging a supper and entertainment . whilst householders are guests for the night . We feel sure that many people would gladly put up one or two men , and give them breakfast the next morning : all who are willing to offer such hospitality are invited to give in their names at the " Gazette " Office not later than Friday morning . Local Men from the Front . There , are several men who have returned to their homes in the district on sick leave from the front , and in order to give them a hearty welcome and show appreciation for their services ; a camp concert has heen arranged . It will take place in the Club Room at the New Inn , Broad - street , Ross , on Friday next , at 8 p.m. Several popular singers have promised to contribute to the harmony of the evening , and the boys who have nobly done their share in keeping the There is , however , a large residue who can- not join it on account of age or for other reasons . At present this residue . which in a greater national emergency could supply many men who would make useful soldiers for internal defence or defence of their own . hearths and homes , has no Military training whatsoever . and is therefore useless for this purpose . Our object is to induce as many men as possible to attain the modified train - flag flying will be given a very hearty wei- ing necessary , which they , can do in their spare time and by performing some three Drills per week . There is . moreover , the further reason why they should do this : there are many men who , while unable te join the Army for various good reasons at present , would he willing to do so in any grave national emergency . such as invasion . when every fit man would be required no matter what his private affairs might dictate . Walter Scott's School . A DELIGHTFUL ENTERTAINMENT . The Lower Schoolroom , Ross , was on Tues- day evening filled to overflowing by a very appreciative audience on the occasion of a school concert given entirely by the scholars nttending the Walter Scotts School , of which Mr. and Mrs. H. S. Cooper are the Master and Mistress . The Rev. R. T. A. Money- come . Any soldier on sick leave who may not have received a formal invitation owing to the difficulty of finding out that they have returned , is most cordially invited to be pre- sent . There will be no charge for admission , but a collection will be made to send tobacco to the men at the front . NOTICE . OUR ANNUAL SHEET ALMANACK WITH Kyrle . Mr. T. A. Powell , of Upton Bishop , wrote of Mr. and Mrs. Cooper , to give them this concert , for it gave the parents of the scholars an opportunity of coming together and seeing for themselves what their boys and girls were being taught in the school . They always said that the education given in the Walter Scott's School was the best elementary education that could be provided in Ross or anywhere else ( applause ) . But the effort that evening was only a small part of what the scholars were really able to accomplish , and he was perfectly certain that the parents ought to be only too glad that their children have the chance of coming under the teaching of Mr. and Mrs. Cooper ( applause ) . He was glad , too , that the non - foundation scholars were there to take part in the programme , for it was a great boon to many parents that they were able for their children to share in the splen- did education given at the Walter Scott's School ( applause ) .
