NATIONAL DEPOSIT SOCIETY . A meeting of the State members of the Ross District of the above Society was held last , when Mr. S. T. Dazeley presided over at Bank Offices , Ross , on Friday evening a fair attendance . The Secretary ( Mr. George B. Kemp ) stated that it had been found necessary to expunge two rules from the Rule Book , which had been included in error owing to the Society having two sec- tions . The rules in question and a letter from the General Secretary of the Society were read , and after discussing same , it was unanimously resolved " That this meeting supports the proposal to expunge paragraphs Secretary reported that he had received several proposed alterations to the rules , which would be submitted to the annual meeting of the Society in May next . Several questions in connection with the Society SPLENDID MEETING AT MONKHALL . The annual point - to - point steeplechases , held in connection with the South Hereford- shire and Ross Harrier Hunts and subject to the National Hunt rules , took place on the all grass course at Monkhall on Tuesday last in dull and somewhat stormy weather , which , of course , materially affected the at - I tendance ; nevertheless , the meeting drew together a large gathering of the supporters of these two popular hunts and others . during the interval a collection was made in aid of the Royal Agricultural Benevolent Institution . Grace having been said , the CHAIRMAN rose and proposed " The King . " He said that as long as they possessed a king he hoped they would be loyal to him and the He was quite sure their sympathy went out to King George at the present moment , for they all knew that their King had his feelings in all matters quite as much as the humblest of them there that evening ( applause ) . The toast was greeted with the singing of the National Anthem . Dro . A. BIRD submitted the health of " The Visitors , " expressing the pleasure of the lodge at seeing so many visitors present those unenlightened that evening . He hoped , however , that visitors , which was the phrase used in Buffaolism , would allow themselves to become " enlightened , " and so join the King Edward VII . " Lodge . He coupled with the toast the names of Mr. C. E. Gray and Mr. T. M. Sainsbury . Mr. GRAY , in reply , said he was at pre- sent an unenlightened , " but as he was al- ways ready to learn , he should be pleased , if they would have him , to become an " en- lightened " member of the Order ( applause ) . Mr. T. M. SAINSBURY also replied , and wished continued prosperity to the lodge . Mr. T. MATTHEWS proposed the healths of " The Chairman and Vice - Chairman , " and the toast was accorded musical honours . The CHAIRMAN . after thanking Mr. Matthews for his kind remarks , said that as long as he represented Ross and lived amongst them , he would do his utmost for the good of the town as a whole , and especi- ally the working classes . He also congratu- lated the Ancient Order of Buffaloes on the philanthropic work they were doing , and wished them every success and prosperity in the future ( applause ) . Bro . ARTHUR POTT submitted the health of the " King Edward VII . Lodge . " He only wished a more competent speaker had been given this toast , and one who could have explained more fully why they wished continued prosperity to this order . There were very many reasons why such an order as the Buffaloes was really paramount . So far as he understood the object of this Order . it was for the promotion of mutual help and kindliness one to afiother , and that was an object which one could not speak in too high a praise . He also thought they would agree with him that any voluntary effort was far better than any form of compulsion . Al- though legislation seemed to point to adopt- Joliffe , with a recitation by Mr. G. B. KEMP , on behalf of Miss Wright , whom he said took a keen interest in the Order , as was shown by the £ 17 she collected towards the treat to Ross children a few months ago ( applause ) . Then he thought the Ancient Order of Buffaloes should claim their support , and their wishes for its prosperity on the grounds of its charity , charity in its proper sense of the word ( applause ) . Another thing , which underlies the fundamental principles of Buffaloism was the spirit of goodwill , and that principle alone was quite sufficient to foster the claims of the order ( applause ) . Those were the principles they as Buffaloes desired to foster , and it was with the great est pleasure that he proposed prosperity and continued good health to the King Edward VII Lodge , and might it live and flourish for many years to come , and with that toast he wished to couple the names of Bro . A. Davey , K.O.M. , P.G. , Tyr . , and Bro . W. H. Rose , K.O.M. , R.O.H. , Grand Secre- tary of England ( applause ) . THE ARMY CRISIS . 121 A white paper on the Army crisis to - day shows that on Friday General Gough and Curragh officers tendered their resignations in preference to moving north . The War Office refused resignations , and ordered the senior officers to London , On Monday the War Office decided the resignations were due to misunderstanding , and gave General Gough a written statement that the Govern- ment retained the right to use forces of the Crown to maintain law and order , hut had no intention of taking advantage of this to crush political opposition to Home Rule .
