The third annual meeting of the Ross The following XI . will represent Ross in

BY THE VICAR OF LLANGARRON . Writing in a Hereford contemporary , " Vaga " says : " The Vicar of Llangarron , on Friday last , with Major Thompson ( Presi- next : -H . N. S. Thomas , A. H. Mayo , A. the Rev. E. E. Cunnington , has completed dent of the Club ) in the chair . Others pre- Cooper , H. Meredith , C. J. Turner , O. H. an entirely new revision of the New Testa- sent included Dr. W. Paulson , Messrs . R. Bussell , W. Longford , H. C. Kerwood , E. F. ment which was published by Messrs . Rout- Drew , R. Drew , jun . , W. J. Munday , C. Smith , W. H. Morgan , R. Hughes . ledge last week under title of " The New Whitby , C. Paxton , E. J. Cooper , M. E. Covenant . " It is over thirty years ago that Brown , A. J. West , W. Sutton , A. Corbett , the Revised Version of the Bible was issued . Llewellyn , J. Bacon , H. Roberts , W. S. Capewell , G. Tyler , C. Cooper , H. Dean , J. by the Universities of Oxford and Cambridge , E. Dunn ( hon . secretary ) . and , undoubted improvement on the author ised version as it was in many respects . it failed to give complete satisfaction . Cunnington's revision is the outcome of a conviction that a more readable version of the New Testament is now required for the general reader . As he says in his introduc- tion to the work , his chief aim has been to produce a book that may be read with pleasure , and without irritation , not as & mere matter of duty .
Mr.
" No one will dispute , " continues the trans- lator . that the Authorised Version can no longer be accepted as an adequate render- ing . Had their been no actual defects , the changes in the English language , and our improved knowledge of the Greek text , would render a corrected version desirable . To meet this want the Revised Version of 1881 was produced . Of that work it is sufficient to say that it has not closed the door upon other attempts . In these days books will not be read , unless they are attractive in style and intelligible . There seems to be no good reason why the New Testament should not be , apart from the value of its contents , as readable a book as any other . The ver sion here presented aims to give the contents of the sacred volume in such wording as , to the best of one's judgment , the writers might have used , had they written in the English of our own day . "
Mr. Cunnington's revision must not be confused or compared with the various at- tempts that have heen made in recent years to paraphrase the New Testament into what may be called the idiom of the man in the street . To attempt such a thing was to in- vite disaster as the results of previous well- intentioned efforts in that direction show . A chatty , colloquial style in recounting . for instance , the gospel - story is apt to result in a jaunty narrative entirely lacking in rever- ence and restraint . We may not all go so far as the worthy old cottager who , being re- commended by her Vicar to read the Epistle
to the Romans in the Revised Version as being better English translation , retorted : " Thank you , kindly , sir ; but St. Paul's English be good enough for I , and I don't care to see it meddled with ! " But that dig- nified and sonorous periods of the Authorised Version have , in themselves . undoubtedly done much to impress the truths which they enshroud on the reader or hearer ; and people are slow to appreciate the advantages that may accrue from a revision of the words and phrases hallowed by long usage .
HEREFORD . FARMER'S FATAL FALL . - An inquet was held at Grafton , Hereford , on Friday , on Francis Ray , a farmer , who fell from a tree and dislocated his neck . Mr. Ray was in an elm tree , which overhung the roadway near his house , lopping off a branch about 15 ft . from the ground , when the hacker slipped from his hand , and in trying to re- gain it he lost his balance . He fell on to the metalled roadway , and death was in- stantaneous Deceased , who was 63 years Anthem " Judge me O God , " Mendelssohn . RUARDEAN . COLLIERY FATALITY . - The twice ad- iourned inquest on Harry Gwilliam ( 43 ) and Hubert Levshon ( 26 ) , both of Littledean , who were killed at the accident at East- ern United Colliery , Ruspidge , on February 5th . was concluded yesterday by Mr. J. W. Guise , the Coroner for the division . There was a heavy fall of rock , which buried the two men and injured a youth named Evans . The stone weighed about nine tons , and broke three props by which it was supported .
Mr. Cunnington's translation is very far removed , indeed , from the previous attempts at popularising the New Testament , and the most conservative cannot complain that any loss of dignity has been incurred by his efforts to translate the Greek text into an English at once more readable and more exact than the Authorised or Revised Ver- In the introduction from which I have already quoted , Mr. Cunnington ex- plains the lines upon which he worked . He deals with the fallacies of existing versions in an interesting and comprehensive manner , and not without a certain dry humour , as , for instance , when he states " To continue to use the word ' publicans ' for collectors of than that of filling up the time of teachers public revenue can serve no other purpose in explaining to children that it does not mean what it seems to mean . In replying , Major Thompson said that he was convinced that coarse fish did not do the amount of damage to young salmon , which was often attributed to them . He re- lated a fishing experience he had a few years ago , when he caught three pike and one trout . On opening them , he found nothing but coarse fish inside the pike ; but the trout contained several young salmon .

The replayed fixture between Whitchurch and Goodrich , abandoned on Boxing Day , was played on Saturday week , Goodrich win- ning a very disappointing game 4-1 .
The Materials and Colours described are now on view , and Colour Displays of the New Shades are being made daily . Ladies are respectfully asked to place their orders for DRESSMAKING as early as convenient , and thus anticipate the busy period which always occurs in the late Spring and early Summer .
Goodrich have now completed all their thus antipat fixtures , and are five points ahead of the Kyrle . The Ross club , however , have three matches to play - Whitchurch and Upton Bishop at home and Hoarwithy away . The Kyrle should easily win all the matches , which will place them at the head of the table a point in hand .
Ross Kyrle Journeyed to Bradley Court on Saturday last to play a return friendly match . The Kyrle were not strongly re- presented , but nevertheless gave a good ac- count of themselves , and a splendid game ended in a draw of one goal each , Abbott scoring for Bradley and Battersea for the

A match between Ross Kyrle and Upton Bishop will be played on Talbot's Meadow on Saturday afternoon next , when the gate money will be given for the benefit of W. Sutton , who was seriously injured in the match at Upton Bishop a few weeks ago . The kick - off is fixed for 3.15 , and it is hoped a good crowd will support this unfortunate player by attending the match .
Ross Council Schools played the Walter Scott School boys on Tuesday , when they had their revenge by beating Scotts School by 6-1 . The Council School boys played finer football , and were better in all depart- ments of the game than their opponents .

Mr. H. Ward Pike , the president , presided over a meeting of the Ross and District evening . Representatives were presnt from Ross Kyrle . Ross St. Mary's , Hoarwithy , Goodrich , Upton Bishon , Marcle , and Whit- church , with Mr. H. Cooper and Mr J. A. Capewell ( hon . secretaries ) .
LATE STARTS AND FINES . Three clubs - Goodrich , Whitchurch , and Hoarwithy - were cautioned for late starts . Ross Kyrle claimed 5s . from Whitchurch for expenses incurred when the latter club failed to fulfil its fixture at Ross . This was carried unanimously . It was decided to play the match on April 18th .
Cinderford were ordered to pay 2s . 6d . expenses incurred in their match with Hoar- withy , when they failed to make an ap- pearance .
CINDERFORD WITHDRAWS .
It was reported that Cinderford had with- drawn from the League , and the 5s . guar- antee of Cinderford was ordered to be for- feited , and in addition , the club to pay a fine of 5s . It was also decided to eliminate all goals scored and all points gained against Cinderford from the League table .
The Chairman said it was very unfortunte that Cinderford had withdrawn from the League , for it had caused the committee , the hon . secretaries , and the clubs a lot of inconvenience . He hoped all the other clubs would finish the season in a sportsmanlike manner , as the League this season appeared to be a greater success among the clubs than formerly .

tells in the end . Not only is this true of individuals but also as regards things of use . Trial and experience are the touch- stones of merit . From time to time all sorts of medicines have been put before the public , and the names of most of these are long forgotten , but Beecham's Pills , which have been in ever - increasing use among all classes of society for three generations , have a greater popularity to - day than ever . Over 6,000,000 boxes are sold annually . Think what these figures signify ! Could this remedy have so extraordinary a sale if it did not supply a real need , -if it was not of ☐ genuine worth , if it did not perform what ■ is promised ? A reliable preparation of the most efficacious and carefully selected ingredients of vegetable origin , these pills are of unequalled value for the relief and cure of those digestive . irregularities which appear as bilious-
ness , constipation , flatulence , failing appetite , dyspepsia , headache , and the depressed conditions of mind and body that accompany such disorders . When- ever you need a corrective medicine , as everyone does at times , you should take
