ADDRESS BY A BARRISTER . " THE ELEVATION OF MAN . " Members of the Brotherhood were glad to welcome back their president , Mr. A E. Mogg , on Sunday last , after his severe ill- ness . There was a fairly good muster , and a particularly inspiring address was delivered by Mr. T. M. Hopkins , barrister - at - law . Mr. Hopkins is the brother of the Vicar of Lyd- brook . The speaker first expressed his opinion that gatherings such as that , at which men of various religious views and political thought gathered together on common ground , were calculated to do an immense amount of good . He had undertaken to ad- dress them upon the elevation of man and to point out to them some means by which man could elevate himself and also his fellow men . He spoke of the great power of ex- ample , and said to read the lives of men of high and noble character elevated the mind of the reader . He urged his hearers to respect all human beings ; respect for others was sadly overlooked at the present time . Bushy , the great schoolmaster , when the King visited his school , received him with his hat on , explaining that he was anxious for his boys to believe that no greater man lived than himself . Here was an instance of a great man realising that to be a power , respect for him by his scholars was of the highest importance . Mr. Hopkins spoke of the influence of anything beautiful upon the mind , saying that the magnificent scenery of their own town , with their fine parish church and elegant spire , pointing to greater things above , all tended to raise man's mind . He then gave many instances of things which lower and degrade the people of to- day , such as intemperance , bad housing , and sweating . He spoke of crime and the present means of punishment , and described capital punishment as degrading and disgusting , and a means of lowering regard for human life , and altogether a failure as a prevention of murder . He said one of the great errors of the day was not to make greater effort to prevent crim being committed , by such means as temperance reform and better housing . He said unfortunately many people excused much evil to - day by saying that they lived under much better circumstances than their fathers . He said they had much to YOUNG LIBERALS . - Under the auspices of the Ross and District branch of the National League of Young Liberals , a public meeting wil he held in the Townhall , Ross , on Satur - be thankful for in the form of improvement lav next , the 14th inst . , when Councillor chn Wood , J.P .. of Gloucester , will give a address in explanation of the Land and Heusing proposals of the Liberal Govern- men . All are invited , and questions will be welcomed . Mr. Clement W. Parish will take the chair at 7.30 prompt . - Advt . ALTON COURT BREWERY COMPANY . - The ninety - sixth general meeting of this company was held at the Brewery , Ross , on Thursday last . The report for the six months ended December 31 showed that after payment of all charges , expenses , and outgoings , includ- ing interest on debentures and deduction of all debts considered bad , there was a balance of £ 2,020 12s . 10d . , which included £ 537 9s . 7d . brought forward . The net profit for the half year was £ 1.483 3s . 3d . The direc- and while it remained they should do their in some matters , but much evil remained , utmost to remove it or mitigate it in the interests of humanity . Mr. Hopkins con- cluded by a reference to the recent legisla- tion to suppress the white slave traffic , and remarked that as true men they must be thankful to see the site of Westminster Aqua- rium , formely a hot - bed of vice , occupied to day by a larger institution which is the head- quarters of a great religious denomination . Next Sunday , Sam Taylor , railwayman , of Cheltenham , will again visit the Brother- hood . His subject is " Warning Signals , " and the address will be illustrated by elec- trical models ..
