SUCCESSFUL COMPETITIONS AT THE
CORN EXCHANGE ,
MAGNIFICENT CHORAL SINGING .
The value of the Eisteddfod movement in Ross is yearly becoming more apparent . The third annual contests were held at the Corn Exchange on Tuesday , and from every point of view were immensely successful and ex- ceptionally well appreciated by the very large audience which filled the building . Although the two previous contests have proved very popular , this year's Eisteddfod has created even greater interest and enthusiasm among People in the town and district , and for weeks past local soloists - and choirs have been busily engaged rehearsing for the contests ; and the competition , which was of an exceedingly high character for local product both in literary , elocutionary , and the musical events
was very keen . The singing in the second choral competition was of an excellent order , especially the rendering of the Ruardean Hill choir who gave a magnificent and ideal in- terpretation of the test - piece , " The Radiant The committee of the Eisteddfod Morn . " deserve high commendation for the work they have accomplished , and Mr. T. J. Guy and Mr. Heber Watkins , the hon . secs . , are also to be congratulated upon the excellent ar- rangements made and for the manner in which the competitions were carried through . Colonel O. R. Middleton was the president . Mr. O. J. Owen , of Abergavenny ( who pos sesses the distinction of being a Welsh Bard ) . again very admirably filled the position of conductor ; in fact a local Eisteddfod without Mr. Owen would be rather a tame affair , for Mr. Owen , with his Welsh humour , is always the moving spirit of these contests . Professor Jacob Gabriel , of Argoed , who ad- judicated at last year's competitions , again decided the musical events . Mr. Gabriel , who is one of the leading Welsh adjudicators , gave eminent satisfaction in all his decisions , and proved himself very popular with the audience . The literary and elocution adjudi- cator was Mr. E. Arnold Watkins , B.A. , of Hereford , who has also had a great amount of Eisteddfod experience . Mr. Watkins's ad- iudication was also highly appreciated . Mr. Bert Restall accompanied in his usual capable manner .
Preliminary contests were held in several events in the afternoon .
