ROSS V. STROUD . The visitors to Ross on Saturday last were the representatives of the Stroud Club , and they brought with them a strong eleven . Jeffery again lost the toss - having only won the toss twice out of fourteen spins this season - and Stroud had the advantage of ROSS AND DISTRICT CRICKET LEAGUE . first use of the wicket . In their first overs both Howell and Montgomery claimed a wicket each , two men being out for six runs . After this runs came at a great pace , Jones , Weston Huggins , and Holloway all scoring freely in Ross spite of the several changes in the bowling . and 189 runs were up when the sixth wicket Perrystone fell . Another good partnership was witnessed between Poole and Parsons , who added 67 runs without being separated , the innings being declared at 206 for six . Against the bowling of Huggins and Bennett the Ross At the Manchester Athletic Club'e sports at batsmen were never really comfortable , but through the individual efforts of Mont- allowheld , which were witnessed by upwards gomery , Banner , and Meredith , the score of 8,000 persons , the sprint champion , W. R. was taken to 188 before the innings closed , Applegarth , in an attempt to beat the 130 Stroud thus making amends for the defeat yards record of 12 8-5sec made by the 1906 they sustained on their own ground against Olympic champion R. E. Walker in 1909 , Ross earlier in the season . Scores : - won the race by a yard from C. W. Taylor , of the Surrey A.C. , but recorded exactly a second more than the South African's best . V. H. A. d'Arcy was third a few inches be- hind the Surrey man . Applegarth was cerned in another attempt on record , which also failed . The Polytechnic team , consist- ing of Applegarth , D'Arcy , J. J. Barker ( the Midland Counties champion ) , and J. Rooney , set out to beat the 42 6-10sec . for 400 metres : held by the German team ( Bohr , Kern , Her- man , and Raw ) , but , although beating the Surrey A.C. by four yards , took 43 4-5sec . for the distance .
