The Ross Gazette , Ltd. , PRINTERS , PUBLISHERS , STATIONERS , BOOKSELERS , ACCOUNT BOOK MAKERS , & o . 44 , High - street , Ross . Ross will have the honour of entertaining a team from the premier cricket club of England on Monday and Tuesday next . In the annals of the Ross Cnb extending back for a period of over 50 years , there has never heen a match that has created more interest in local cricket circles . We expect to see quite a large crowd of spectators , for during practically the whole of the season visitors are always welcome to watch the matches , so that now a small charge is being made , they will have an opportunity of show- ing their appreciation of the club's hospitality in the past . The names of the players appear in our cricket notes , and it will be seen that Ross will be ably represent- ed against a team which includes many notable exponents of the game . Stumps will be drawn early on Monday to allow players and snectators time to witness the finals at the Regatta . The Prospect has been the cause of serious rioting in the past , but we are sure that no protest can he raised against the decision of the Urban District Conncil to make a few flower beds and generally to fulfil the duty mposed upon them by the deed of gift of The keeping the ground in good order . very nature of the surroundings , and the historic associations with John Kyrle make it impossible for the Prospect to be used for any other purpose than a peaceful " walking place , " in which the culture of flowers is quite in keeping with the ideals of the generous donor . The annual open Croquet Tournament , arranged by the South Herefordshire Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club , has rapidly gained an important place amongst the fixtures that are patronized by enthusiastic , followers of the game . Amongst the competitors next month will be Miss Coote , the gold medal- list for the year , and many well - known players from all parts of the country . Dur- ing the croquet week , the beautifully kept grounds in the Wilfon road are thrown open to the public , a small charge being made for admission , and no doubt many residents and visitors will gladly avail themselves of the opportunity . The Ross Secondary School is not proving the white elephant that some pessimists pre- dicted , for the Urban Council has to find only a rate of twopence this year , instead of threepence . This is very gratifying to rate- nayers , and a statement was made at the Council meeting that with a few more pupils to earn further Government grants , this sum would be halved . The school offers an ex- ceptionally good education at very moderate fees , and the Chairman's appeal for more support should meet with a satisfactory re- sponse from those who desire that their chil- dren should receive the undoubted benefits offered . The vexed question of lighting the town has again been thoroughly thrashed out by the Urhan Council . The committee's report states that the adoption of an automatic control for lighting the lamps would lead to a saving in expense . After some discussion , it was decided that before going to the ex- pense of fitting auto - gaslighters to the 172 street lamps , that both the gas and electric light companies he invited to tender in ac- cordance with the Surveyor's specification , for the maintenance of the present lamps , at a price per lamp , for three years . Any saving that can be made without lowering the present very satisfactory , standard of lighting will be most welcome . The question of the re - opening to traffic of the old coach road at the Lea is not to he allowed to rest by the Ross Rural Council , who have now appointed a committee to draw up a report to be sent to the County Council . On the present road are several exceedingly dangerous corners , and with the great increase of fast traffic it is becoming every day more essential that . something should be done to improve matters . In other counties a great deal has been done in the way of straightening and improving the roads , and Herefordshire ought not to hold back , especially as industries are very few , and the influx of visitors is a real hoon to the trade of the county . We are afraid that although taking the county through , the road surfaces compare very favourably with most counties , yet the tortuous and often dangerous character of our roads leaves much to be desired .
