George Moore , labourer , in the employ of Mr. Felix Ford , who was driving the dray up King - street , said that defendant drove right across the road and in front of the horse's head . There was a lot of traffic about . He could not say whether defendant could have got through on his proper side
or not .
The Chairman said the Bench thought de- fendant committed an error of judgment . He would be fined 10s . and costs , 248. in all .

ROSS V. CHELTENHAM . On Wednesday in last week the premier Ross eleven journeyed to Victoria Park , Cheltenham to play off the return match with that club . Jeffery , for the seventh time in succession , was unlucky to lose the toss and the homesters batted first on a rain - affected pitch , which , under the influence of a hot sun , gradually became difficult . The opening pair of batsmen started carefully to the bowling of Howell and Whitehouse . Barnett , with the score at nine , was missed in the slips , and the same batsman had a second life at 20 , another dropped slip - catch , Howell being the unfortunate bowler on both occasions . With the score at 34 Howell had his revenge by clean bowling Barnett . Blood- worth , who scored 94 in the match at Ross , followed in , and after getting Howell away to the leg boundary for four , was missed in the slips off that bowler's next ball . Runs now came quicker , and at 60 Jeffery tried a change of bowling , he himself relieving Whitehouse , and Young displacing Howell at the top end . In Jeffery's first over Blood- worth was missed in the long field , but the Ross captain got him caught in his third over , 75-2-88 . At the other end Young beat Montagnon at 80 with a fine delivery . The next three wickets fell somewhat cheap- ly , though Thompson , in scoring ten runs , gave a chance to cover - point before he had opened his account off Jeffery's bowling , and profiting by the escape he hit the next ball out of the ground for six . The wicket seem- ed to suit Young and Jeffery's bowling , and the whole side was eventually dismissed for 128 , Young being accredited with five wickets for 23 runs and Jeffery three for 34 . The former's deliveries kept very low . Ross opened their innings with Abbott and Thomas

At the corner he passed a motor lorry and went right across the road on to his wrong side . A dray was being driven up King - street , and defendant's car went right up to the horse . If the man in charge had not pulled the horse up sharply , there would have been a serious accident .

ROSS V. CHEPSTOW . Quite contrary to the past four or five weeks the match at the Park was produc- tive of some " eally interesting cricket , and a home victory . Runs came at a faster pace than usual , but the outstanding feature of the game was the magnificent stand made for the eighth wicket by Whitehouse and Meredith for Ross , who put on 110 runs . Whitehouse played delightful cricket , and contributed 104 , including one six and 12 fours . It was a fine display , and one which Other pariseworthy scores were added by H. met with the approbation of the spectators . Meredith ( 32 not out ) , H. N. S. Thomas ( 82 ) , and W. C. Banner ( 31 ) , the venture closing damage with the ball for Chepstow . The with the score at 240. Holly did the most visitors also displayed bright and interesting tactics , and it was most peculiar that it was their tail end that gave the Ross trundlers and fielders a little anxious time , for at one time it looked as though they intended scores by Richards , Thomas and Hill , the tenth man , Marmont , hit out with vigour , and put together a most useful 48 , and it was not until 62 runs had been added by the last wicket that the innings closed at 172 , or 68 runs behind their opponents . The match arranged with the old Here- fordians XI . for Tuesday , July 28th , has been cancelled by the Tourists . Mr. R. E. Members are asked to make a note of this .

ROSS AND DISTRICT , CRICKET LEAGUE .
ROSS " A " V. PERRYSTONE .
In the Ross and District League competi- tion these teams met at Perrystone on Saturday , and the game ended in an easy victory for the " A " team . The chief
feature of this contest was the innings of H. Sherwood , who played good cricket for his 58 . Another fine innings was played by R. E. Davies , who was not out for 36. With 122 runs up for four wickets , Skipper Price de- clared , and when Perrystone went to the wicket , the bowling of Price ( six wickets for three runs ) , and Counsell ( four for 12 ) , proved too good for the batsmen , and the whole side were disposed of for only 17 runs . NOTES .
The Ross club again proved that they are not , as a team , adapted for a slow wicket , and it is noteworthy to record that the last four matches lost by the club have been de cided on wickets unsuitable to the club's fast bowlers . It is confidently expected that with a return of hard and fast pitches the club will be seen in a winning vein again . It is barely three weeks now before the all important M.O.C. match , and the mem- bers of the Selection Committee are exert- ing every effort to get together a powerful XI . to oppose them , and one worthy of the occasion , so as to make the fixture attrac-
