An interesting allusion to the peculiar idiosyncrasy of the Wesleyan Methodist Church was made by the Rev. T. Dinsdale Young in his presidential address . Mr. Young said that one section of the com- munity was eminently conservative , while another was not ; there had always been an Anglican party as well as a Dissenting party in Methodism . Its founder , it may be pointed out , was a strong Tory in his poli- tical views , while for the leader of a new Acknowledgment . movement he was distinctly conservative in TUMMY . - Mrs . G. LOCAL TOPIOS .
Great interest is heing taken in Sir Ernest Shackleton's team of huskies , or sledge - dogs , which have been brought from Winnipeg to Mitcham . Until they started from Montreal they had never tasted bis- cuit , but they have taken quite kindly to it . Along the shores of Lake Winnipeg , their native home . they have lived mainly on fish . The breed of the husky is about one - quarter wolf and three - quarters dog . They are ohiefly used in Canada for sleighing and hauling fish , and each one of the team is able to draw a load of one hundred pounds . They can travel forty miles a day , if neces- sary . It is the opinion of many experts that the reason why . Amundeen succeeded when Capt . Scott met with disaster is that Amundsen depended on dogs , and Scott , for humanitarian reasons , resolved to employ ponies ..
The enthusiasm aroused by the " Waver- ley " centenary shows once again that Scott is secure in his position as a classic , It is said that our young people do not read him now . If such be the case , they are the losers . Perhaps the centenary might be fitly marked by setting some of Scott's books as holiday tasks . They are so thoroughly wholesome that no objection could be raised by parents . A year or two ago a father justly made a public protest against the worse than absurdity of giving a small boy " East Lynne " to study during his vacation , with a view to subsequent examination . That a man could make such a selection in the face of such a literature as ours is un- thinkable . It is to be hoped the publication of his foolishness caused him to see the error of his ways before he had time to undermine the taste of the rising generation .
The Grand Committee of the House of Commons , presided over by the Hon . Arthur Stanley , on Tuesday , considered the Health Resorts and Watering Places Bill , present- ed by Sir Thomas Roe , with the purpose of empowering local authorities in England and Wales to levy a rate for advertising health resorts and watering places . The object of the measure as introduced was to give the same powers to the councils of boroughs and urban districts in England and Wales to ad- vertise the advantages and amenities of their boroughs and districts as health resorts or watering places as are possessed by local authorities in Ireland under the Health Re- sorte and Watering Places ( Ireland ) Art . 1909. The Bill was amended so as to extend its powers to Scotland , and , as amended , it was ordered to be reported to the House for third reading . According Clause 1 of the Bill , boroughs or urban districts may adver- tise their advantages and amenities by the insertion of advertisements in newspapers or by placards or otherwise , and may expend money for the purpose , provided that the sums so expended shall not in any one financial year reed the amount that could be raised by a rate of one penny in the pound on the rateable value of the borough or district .
