DEATH OF CANON CAPES . - The Rev. W. W. Capes , Canon of Hereford , died at his residence in the Close late on Friday night . tion , and it was his intention then to live A few weeks ago he handed in his resigna- retired at Malvern . As a College Tutor in Oxford and as a University Reader in An- cient History , he was one of the best teach- ers of his day , and his writings placed him in the first rank of ecclesiastical historians . At Hereford he will be much missed in the Chapter , where his work was invaluable , es- pecially with regard to the editing of the ancient records and the interest he took in the Cathedral School . He was 83 years of
age .
LLANGARRON . CHILDREN'S COURT - At a Children's Court , held at the Shirehall , Hereford , on Saturday , before Mr. G. J. Caldwell ( in the chair ) , and Ald . A. P. Turner , a lad of 15 , named Thomas Bird , of Hill Cottages , Llan- garron , near Ross , was summoned for that he , being the bailee of a bicycle , the property of Mary Ann Innes , of Tillington , did con- vert it to his own use and steal the same . From the evidence of Mrs. Innes , who is a carrier , it appeared that the lad had worked at Tillington until September 27th , a Sun- day . He wanted to go home , and Mrs. Innes hired him a bicycle , for which he paid 1s . 6d . , on the understanding that he was to return the machine the following day . She did not hear any more of the defendant , who failed to return the machine , and in consequence she wrote about it to his home . Eventually she issued a summons . P.C. Yapp , of Llangarron , who served the sum- mons on defendant , on October 9th at Wern Farm , Llanrothal , near Monmouth , told the Bench that the lad made the following state- p.m. Prayer Meeting . Thursday , 8 p.m. , Young I hired it to ride home to Llangarron , and ment in reply : " I didn't steal the bicycle ; I have not earned any money to send it back . Mrs. Innes wrote to me about the bicycle , and I intended to send it to her by carrier on Saturday to the Red Lion Inn , Hereford . " The officer then took possession of the ma- chine , which was now produced . The lad , going into the box , confirmed the officer's evidence , and the Chairman , announcing that the Magistrates would merely bind him over for six months , cautioned him to be more careful in future to return property in time , otherwise he might find himself in serious difficulties .

HOW TO GROW HAIR ,
A NOTICEABLE GROWTH ABSOLUTELY GUARANTEED , OR MONEY RETURNED .
But the people in the homesteads of the maple land so wide ,
Britain finds them by her side .
From the northland or the southland , when is heard the sound of drum , From the eastland or , the westland many sons of Empire come ; When the call from Britain cometh to her folk across the foam , Loyal sons of Britain's outposts rally to the call from Home .
There's a land where southern breezes often blow from day to day , And the borders of the southland rest amid the breakers ' spray ;
A distinct growth of hair you can actually see , or your money back . These are the conditions under which you try Lavona Hair Tonic , no matter what state your hair is in . Even if you have no hair , Lavona Hair Tonic has proved its ability to grow hair on a bald head - remove all traces of dandruff and stop falling hair . You can have a written guar- antee to this effect signed by the chemist himself from Albert Porter , 18 , High - street , or from any leading chemist anywhere , and if you are not satisfied , take your guarantee contract to the chemist from whom you bought the tonic , and he will refund your money . Statistics have actually proved that this tonic gives satisfaction 99 times out of 100. Get a bottle to - day . You will be astonished at the wonderful results following its use .
ROSS WEATHER RECORDS .
In the land of gums and wattle , desert heat , and winter flood ,
Dwell the people of the island who are proud of British blood .
From the heights near Kosciusko to the plains far in the west , Steadfast stands the truth unchallenged- that they love the Homeland best .
From the northland , ete . There's a land that stretches northwards , part of Afric's sunny shore , From Table Bay , to Tonga Land , and the Transvaal's golden store ; There , many tongues and races dwell , but in spite of all alarms , They are ready , aye , and willing , when comes the call To arms ! " For when the time of trouble comes they prove their worth in deed , And with other sons of Britain rally in her hour of need .
From the northland , etc. There's a land far east of Suez , a pearl amid the sea ,
Rich in oriental splendour , land of wealth and mystery , Home of mosques , cupolas , temples , and of jewels rich and rare ,
And the vision is enchanted with the feast of colour there ; From the fertile plains of Ganges to the Cape of Comorin ,
India's sons pour out their treasures so that British arms shall win . From the northland , etc.

MONTHLY REPORT FOR OCTOBER . The month just closed possessed many in- teresting features from a climatological point of view . Firstly there is to be noted a deficiency both in bright sunshine and the rainfall , an unusual feature in any month . October is normally the wettest month of the whole twelve , but this year the rainfall total is about one - half of the average ex- the general prevalence of the anticyclonic pectation . This is partly accounted for by conditions well on towards the middle of the month , the first twelve days being absolutely rainless , following on a dry period of eleven days in September , and making a total of 23 consecutive rainless days an uncommon occurrence in the autumn season . Not- withstanding this absence of rain , the weather was very cloudy as a whole , there being as many as six sunless days , and an equal number on which the record was less than half an hour . A normal October yields from 95 to 105 hours of bright sun- shine . The contrast this year is all the more marked after such a brilliant September . The market to - day was a comparatively Unlike its predecessor , October did not ex - small one , but trade on the whole was brisk . perience any extremes of temperature ; in fact the mean temperature for the month was only half a degree lower than that of September .

Seedlings and young plants which are Holy to suffer during severe weather must be afforded a reasonable amount of protection at night , All that is needed to protect those growing in rows are forked stakes and rods or Laths and mats or pieces of carpet or other protective covering . The forked stakes can be put in position at the end of the rows and the rods got ready and laid on them whenever convenient . Then when a sharp frost is ex- pected it is only necessary to lay the mats over the rods and hold them in place by means of bricks or heavy stones . They are removed again in a moment .
Another simple method of affording protec- top or bottom . Stakes can be fixed inside the tion only requires a good - sized box , without corners , and their tops can be left about half an inch below the top sides of the box , so that the glass , if it exactly fits the box , can rest on them and be secure . It appreciates the addition of a little leaf - mould . If planted in full sun it will be necessary to afford moisture after the flowers fade , until the foliage also dies down .
