A Yonng Soldler's Life . Writing home to his parents at Pontshill , Pte . O. Lewis , of the Herefordshire Regi- ment , now stationed at Hereford , gives an interesting sketch of the life of our young soldiers , and urges other young men to join . He says :
Times
The training has altered a lot , and is much more interesting than squad drill , etc. We now do skirmishing , reconnoitring , etc. We are sent out in small parties , about six , and have to note all we see whether we find a good position for defence , whether it com- mands roads , etc. , and report to our captain . Did you see in last week's " Hereford the account of No. 8 Company uit on night duty ? Hereford was supposed to be besieged , and the defending party short of ammunition . Three waggons were supposed to be sent from Ledbury . Our company was sent to meet them at Dormington ( about 5 miles out ) , and Nos . 6 and 7 Companies had to try to intercept us . The attacking party was to start from the north of Hereford . Our cap- tain , who is an old South African war man and up to all the tricks of the trade , con- cluded that the enemy would not expect us to make for the north , where the attack was coming from , and accordingly took that direction : He was quite right , for our cyclists did not report the enemy until they got to the bridge over the Lugg on the Wor- cester road , and then they were only 20 strong . We rushed the bridge , and the umpiros gave their decision in our favour , na . we were over 60 strong , and we got through without any further opposition ,
We had a route march of about 16 miles yesterday .
" But the gift of God is eternal life . " However much our lives were damaged by the effects of sin , God could do away with those effects , and restore us to strength and to fulness of life .
The speaker said he wished he might come among them as recruiting sergeant for the army of God , and that each one of them would send in to his appeal the answer : Sir put my name down ! "

The Board may take this opportunity of stating that , should it be found necessary to take advantage of the offers which Guard- ians have so readily made , preference would be given to offers of a complete institution or of a complete block which , though it might be administered by the Guardians ' staff , could be kept altogether distinct from the rest of the institution of which it forms part . The reservation of a ward or wards not constituting an entire block , or of a cer- tain number of beds in an institution , would probably not meet the needs of the case . The Board think it right to add that while , should occasion arise , they will be glad to facilitate the appropriation of any accommo- dation which it may reasonably be supposed duty and the duty of the Guardians to re- can be spared by the Guardians , it is their member that the accommodation is primarily provided to meet the needs of the poor of the Union The Board are assured that it is not the wish of the Military Authorities , that infirmary accommodation which may " possibly be expected to be required for the use of the civil population should be taken for the use of the military . Before , there fore , the Board could properly approve a proposal such as the Guardians have in mind they would need to be satisfied that a suffi- cient margin of accommodation would be at the disposal of the Guardians for the due fulfilment the primary duties . I am , sir ,
Your obedient servant , A. R. SYMONS , Assistant Secretary .
The CHAIRMAN said that when this let- ter came it seemed obvious that they should let the kind ladies connected with the local Red Cross Society know what was the result of their offer to the War office . There hap- pened to be another meeting here , and with the consent of the Guardians then present a letter was written to the Red Cross Society informing them that these premises could not be used for the purpose they had in view . The Board were now no doubt aware of the fact that the Red Cross Society had taken a nice house , was fitting it up and furnishing it , and that it was nearly ready for the ac- ceptance of any wounded soldiers that might be sent there .
The Clerk also read a letter from Mrs. Currey thanking the Board for what they had done , and stating how they appreciated the kind offer of the Board .

The Great War Sale .
AN ENORMOUS SUCCESS .
OVER
£ 200 REALISED . The long - looked far , much - talked of , and extremely popular great War Sale is now Over . It was held in the Corn Exchange Buildings , Ross , on Tuesday , and the unani- mous verdict is that it was " An enormeas and unqualified success in every particular . " The object of the sale was to provide more comforts , and , as the Chairman of the Co : a- mittee had said , more luxuries , if they liked , for the Ross Territorials now serving their King and Conutry . It was undoubted.y

a most popular move on the part of the or- ganisers , and no sooner had the scheme cen set in motion than the inhabitants of Ross and the surroundin district enteed the spirit of the movement with a whole- heartedness and a cordial co - operation which spell " success " from the very first . Indeed , never in the history of Ross has there been such a unanimity of good feeling in ail quarters . There was but one desire shown by those who supported it with gifts or pe sonal services , and the crowds of eager pur- chasers to make it go . The mere mention . of the sale and its object seemed quite suffi- cient , for the response made to the appeal for saleable goods far exceeded all expecta- tions . As an instance of this we have only to make mention of just a few of the things that were most freely given , viz . , the spon- taneous offer of a motor car , two horses , a grand pright piano , a rubber - tyred carr age , some most valuable jewellery , live pigs . and poultry , etc. , etc. As a matter of fact the lots ran into thousands , and for this most liberal response , the hon . secretary and committee , under whose direction the sale was held , wish to publicly thank most heartily the numerous donors for their un- bounded liberality . Then , of course , a sa of such vast dimensions as this proved to be , could not be a success without buyers , and in this direction it was astounding to see how these " rolled up in such large crowds . At times the rush was so great that the doors of the hall had to be closed to prevent over - crowding , and though that may have caused disappointment to some people , it was the only thing that could be done to avoid disorder and perhaps panic .
The arranging of the hall and stalls was left to a large and hard - working committee , which comprised many ladies , and this work was carried out in a most business - like man- ner , the many stalls being so arranged thu the hall and tea rooms presented a very pleasing appearance . The stalls consisted of those for ladies ' clothing , baby linen , mil- linery , fancy work , dd . , 2d . , and 1d . articles , books , a sixpenny stall , pincushions , jewel- lery men's hosiery , hats , etc .; men's cloth- ing , sports goods and pictures , musical in- struments , fruits and vegetables , scents and soaps , weighing machine , furniture , rooms , together with a grand organ recital , a museum ; cake , apple , and potato competi- tions , Indian Palmist , and other side shov attractions . All these departments were in charge of a numerous company of harl working and never - tiring " assistants . " both ladies and gentlemen , and thanks to thir persuasive powers behind the " counters , " together with the help of the local auction- leers in the evening , a truly magnificent te sult has been achieved .

Mr. GREATREX YATES , in a few ope 1- ing remarks at 2 o'clock , said he would like to say how splendidly and how grandly and freely the people of Ross had shown their patriotism in so many practical ways since the outbreak of war . " Whatever had been promoted for any good cause , whether by subscription lists or by concerts , the Ross people had done their duty well . It was with the greatest pleasure that he wished to thank the many friends in and around Ross who have sent such valuable articles for the sale in order to provide comforts and even luxuries - if they liked , for the men de- served them for the Ross and district Terri- torials in B Company and also those in other companies , and for the other Ross men set- ing with the colours . On Sunday he had a talk with his son , who came home for a few hours , and who was called back rather sud- denly , and he told him how much the en appreciated the kindness of the people t home for the many things that had be sent to them . The men were to have come home for a short time this weak , but some thing must have happened for their leave was suddenly cancelled . But they hoped to have them home for a few days a little later on , when he knew the people of Ross would give them a hearty welcome home , and an enthusiastic send - off before they left to go for India or elsewhere ( hear , hear ) . He hoped they would spend all the money they coul possibly spare , and he knew the Ross Terri torials would appreciate their kindness . The articles were marked down as low as possible and it would give those remaining at home who were unable to serve with the colours of doing something to provide comforts fo their local Territorials ( applause ) .

The large company present then sang wit the greatest enthusiasm , " God save King . "
From the time the sale was opened unti a late hour in the evening , there was n a dull moment , for in addition to the excite ment caused by the eager purchasers to ge the best bargains at the lowest prices , ther was the hmorous side of the proceeding in the form of a grand organ recital , an the visit of an Indian Palmist , etc. , whic made the event an attractive and popul one . Trade was very brisk during the after noon , but at night the hall was transferre into a busy market , when the remainin There was goods were sold by auction . room in the main hall upstairs for furnitur and the live stock , so this was displayed the ground floor formerly used as the butt and poultry market ...
THE COMPETITIONS . The cake competition was won by a gent man who gave the weight as 21hs . 12oz while the actual weight was 2lbs . Mr. Mew won the potato prize , giving t number as 102 , while the netual number 103. In the ante competition Mr. Ya and Mr. R. Taylor tied with the same nu ber , there being 89 in the basket . The result of the motor car sale will made known in our next edition . From a pecuniary point of view the res of the sale is really astonishing , but it impossible to say what sum will eventua be realised , as there is still to come in sale of the motor car . horses , carriages , other items .
