LETTER FROM CAPT . POPE . - Writing from Pembroke Dock on October 31st , Capt . A. W. W. Pope says : " It may interest the am appointed to this new Battalion of Lord Kitchener's Army - 9th Battalion K.S.L.I. At present I am in command , and we have RIFLE SHOOTING COMPETITION . - A shooting match for a silver spoon is taking place at the Henry - street Range of the Ross Minia- ture Rifle Club . The competition is open to members who joined the club this year , and will be concluded on Friday , November 18th . Three targets may be fired , the best two
to count .

CHRISTIANITY AND THE WAR . - The monthly service for men only , held under the direc tion of the Church of England's Men's Society , took place in Ross Parish Church , on Sunday afternoon last . There was only a fair attendance , and the address was de- livered by the Rector , the Rev. R. T. A. Money - Kyrle , who took for his subject . " Christianity and the War , " contending throughout his discourse that this was a just war , in which they as a nation were en- gaged .
BAPTIST YOUNG PEOPLE'S SOCIETY . - A suc- cessful social evening , held in connection with the above society , took place in the Baptist Schoolroom on Tuesday evening . when nearly fifty members and friends were present . There was a musical programme . consisting of pianoforte duets by Miss Hicks and Miss Watkins ; quartettes by Miss Gerty Foster , Mrs. Mogg , Mr. L. Hicks , and Mr. A. E. Mogg ; and recitations by Mr. A. Hill . Games were indulged in , and the Rev. J. W. Kettle , in an appropriate little speech , explained the objects of the society . Re- freshments were provided by the committee of ladies . Mr. Nicholas kindly acted as ne- companist .

N.S.P.C.C. The Hereford and County Branch of the National Society for the Pre- vention of Cruelty to Children has during the quarter ended 30th September , 1911 . inquired into 35 complaints of neglect , ill- treatment , and other wrongs of childhood . of which 31 were found to be true , affecting 91 children and 42 offenders . Action was taken as follows : -25 cases were warned , 3 were prosecuted and convieted , and 3 were otherwise dealt with . The Society's insper- tor made 188 visits of supervision .

Mr. COOPER in giving the report of Finance Committee , stated that the bala at the bank last Board day was £ 456 13s . less unpresented cheques of £ 4 7s . 11d . , le ing £ 452 5s . 7d . They required that me ing £ 111 1s . 6d . to meet their current lia ties , and when those had been dischar there would he a credit balance of £ 341 1d . FEEDING THE CASUALS . Col. O. R. MIDDLETON presented House Committee's report , which sho that they had inspected the house that m ing , and that everything was found s factory .
The Master wished to acknowl with thanks the gifts of papers from Cooper , and fruit from the Vicar and Chu wardens of Hope Mansell Church . maternity ward had been re - decorated , the painters engaged had been retained t other work in the infirmary . Sanction asked for the purchase of two strips of leum , which request of the Master was commended , the cost not to exceed £ 3 . number in the house that day was 84 against 79 for the corresponding period year , and 114 casuals had been relieved ing the fortnight , as compared with 152 year , or a decrease of 38. The matron's port was gone through , and considered s factory , as were also the Medical Officer's ports . The committee wished to ment how very pleased they were with the wa which the work in the maternity ward . been carried out . It had been done creditably , and they thought the thank the Board were due to the Master for ca ing out the work so well . Continuing , Middleton said that under a new order f the Local Government Board , which co into force on Saturday next , they w have to make a change of diet for the cas -which diet was to consist of gruel or co and margarine , for which prices could he tained . The committee recommended gruel should be given these people . was the order of the Local Governn Board , so they could not help themsel The committee also recommended that Master be authorised to purchase for casual ward four dozen plates , and t dozen mugs , in order to serve these n out . He ( Col. Middleton ) proposed adoption of the report .

LEAVE OF ABSENCE GRANTED The CLERK read a letter from Dr. Camphell , the Medical Officer , stating . he had received a commission in the ' Medical Corps , which would necessitate being away from Ross a great deal , an therefore asked for leave of absence . EXTRA . WINTER RELIEF . The CLERK real a letter from the mingham Union dealing with the qu of granting extra winter relief to any mingham paupers that might be livi the Ross Union from December to th of February , and if necessary to the e March . The scale of extra relief was , through which these paupers could firing , and other necessaries during the ter months .
The CLERK pointed out that they had one pauper from the Birmingham ' residing in this Union , and the extra would be given him accordingly .
NO APPLICATIONS . The Clerk reported that he had n ceived a single application in reply t advertisement for a head nurse in sued to Nurse Mayall , and he supposed he have to advertise again .
