TO THE EDITOR OF THE Ross Gazette . SIR , May I ask for the publication in your valuable paper of the attached letter from Lieut - General Sir R. Baden - Powell .

now
In this time of National emergency , comes the opportunity for the Scoute organisation . to show that it can be of material service to the country . The Scouts give valuable assistance to the State at home- and for this their training and organisation has already to a great extent fitted them . Their duties would be non - military , but would in some cases come within the scope of police work , and these would be carried out under the general direction of the Chief Constable of each county where he cares to utilize the services of the Scouts .
These duties would include the following : ( a ) Handing out notices to inhabitants , and other duties connected with billeting , commandeering , warning , etc.
( b ) Carrying out communications by means of despatch - riders , signallers , wireless ,
etc.
( c ) Guarding and patrolling bridges , cul- verts , telegraph lines , etc. , against damage by individual spies .
( d ) Collecting information as to supplies , transport , etc. , available .
among inhabitants .
( e ) Carrying out organised relief measures ( f ) Helping families of men employed in de- ( g ) Establishing first - aid , dressing or nursing

stations , refuges , dispensaries , soup kitchens , etc. , in their club rooms .
( h ) Forwarding despatches dropped by air- craft .
With their ability to rig their own shel- ters , to cook their own food , and to regulate their own roster of duties in the patrols , the Scouts are already organised in the best practical units for such duties .
THE WAR AND THE HARVEST . To THE EDITOR OF THE Ross Gazette . SIR , In this time of stress , it is the duty ( It is assumed that they will be excused of everyone to help in any way they can . from school attendance by the education We cannot all go to the front to fight our committees , and from work by the employ- country's battle ; but may I , through your ers ) . The above list does not exhaust all columns , suggest to our townsmen and the duties which they might undertake ; it others , who can in any way spare the time , merely gives an outline which commissioners that they may do a national service by going can no doubt elaborate to suit their respec- into the country and assist in the ingather - tive areas , after consultation with their ing of the harvest . Chief Constables and Defence Authorities .
Our food supply may ere long be of more I am confident of one thing , and that is , importance to us , than even the shouldering that all ranks will pull together with the of a rifle . The harvesting this year is rend - greatest cordiality and energy on this unique ered more difficult by the laid condition of occasion for doing a valuable work for our the crops , and the withdrawal from the King and country .. fields of large numbers of men , who have so " nobly responded to their country's call to
arms .
I would also most earnestly appeal to those Trade who have leisure , and usually spend much of their time in games and rivolities , give them up for the time being , and do some- thing for their country's good . THOMAS PREECE .

I hope , as more is clear- ed , to sow quite 1 acres in all , on ground which in an ordinary way would have been sown with mustard for sheep feeding , or green manuring . Also I have had a quanti- ty of cabbage seed sown in the garden bord- ers , to be transplanted later in a field . To- day my gardeners are busy making an extra sowing of onions and carrots on potato ground , only just cleared , which in the or- dinary way would have laid fallow .
Should not all farmers who may have a few acres of cleared ground do the same To say nothing of the National importance of additional food supply in case of emergency , it might pay them well .
Further , I would venture to suggest that every farmer might allow his labourers a few rods of additional land to crop for their families , with such vegetables as may still be

arrangement might surely be made in every parish by which those who are unable to pro- cure an immediate supply of seed , should be provided with it , on loan if necessary . Also that those who have gardens might sow cab- bage seed now , and distribute the plants at normal prices , when the planting - out time comes . Yours faithfully Pengethly , Ross , August 11th , 1914 . P.S. - I have been , told since writing the above that our townsmen , Messrs . Bussell and Pike , have already promised to give packets of turnip seed to anyone applying for it either customers or non - customers . All honour to them , and may many take ad- vantage of their liberality .
Hairspecialists and physicians advise its use , and chemists have such faith in its efficacy that they give purchasers a signed guarantee to refund the price paid in full should it fail to give satisfaction . If your hair is thin and lustreless -if it is being choked and killed by dan- druff you should obtain a bottle of this wonderful guaranteed Lavona Hair Tonic to day .
