The family of the late Mrs. James Smith , wish to thank all friends for their kind sympathy and floral tributes during their sad bereavement .
" A considerable shrinkage of business in the textile trade at all events , is inevitable to begin with , and this will necessarily entail loss and sacrifice in many directions . These evils , however , will be greatly reduced if the public realise the fact that the best way to safety is to alter their arrangements and habits of life as little as they can , con- sistently with prudence , and the economies which it will obviously be necessary for them to practise in present circumstances .
It is not our intention , therefore , to
make any change in cur usual autumn ar- rangements , except in so far as the present war may render it impossible to deal with certain European countries .

LOCAL NEWS .
The Ross Gazette .
THURSDAY , AUGUST 6th , 1914 .
TO OUR READERS .
THE distressing news of the past few days far surpasses anything in serious- ness within the memories of those who have not lived through the fateful days of the Franco - German War of 1870 . We are brought face to face with a crisis which has often been predicted by men whose words have been too frequently dis- regarded . The least we can do now is to give our full confidence to our leaders , who have shown that they do not flinch from the enormous responsibility thrust upon
them .
The eloquent appeal of one whose noble work in our midst has endeared him to us all will not fall on deaf ears , and we are sure that Archdeacon Ingram's words will make everyone realise his duty to his neighbour in this hour of trial : Not only should we refrain from the least trace of panic , but we must aim at doing all that lies in our power to ensure the safety of the nation .
Several ladies have already convened a meeting for Thursday morning at 11.30 to start a scheme for providing comforts for the troops . This will provide work for those who are left behind , to whom it will no doubt be a relief that they are doing some small service for their country .
Steps will certainly be taken to call to- gether all who have at any time had a knowledge of military matters , with a view to forming a branch of Lord Roberts National Service League . Men of all . ages will be wanted to guard our homes when our army has been sent to the con- tinent , and in this matter Ross will not be second to any town in showing its readi- ness to serve King and Country .
WAR TELEGRAMS .
These will be received each day at the " Gazette " Office , and published as they arrive .
Subscriptions to cover the very heavy cost of these special messages will be gratefully acknowledged in our columns . Enquiries for the latest news by tele- phone , telegraph , or post from subscribers to our War Telegraphic Service , will be willingly answered between 8 a.m. and 10 p.m.
News is received direct from the Press
