He lay awake for several hours thinking out the problem . He flattered himself that his knowledge of women was exhaustive and com plete that he understood all their moods and whime , that he knew their strength and limi tations , that , given an opportunity , he could get the consent of any woman to marry him . He admitted that they were ticklish animals to deal with . That they could neither be driven nor reasoned with - that force and logic were lost upon them . Nevertheless , to the man who understood the sex , they were quite easy to manage .
May Trefusis was probably in anything but a plastic mood at the present moment . No doubt her pride had been wounded and her vanity stabbed to the quick . Possibly ahe would be saying to herself that she would never trust a man again . All jilted women said that until someone else came along , and then they were only too pleased to show to the first man that they did not care a map , and that they were happier with the second man than they had ever been before .

He was out to better his fortune , and nothing else mattered as far as he was concerned .
On the morning after his talk in the bar- parlour he went out in search of Tregarrick Wood . He had not the remotest idea in what direction it lay , and , as he was anxious to keep his methods and purposes a profound secret , he was afraid to inquire of the land- lord or anyone connected with the hostel . He had plenty of time at his disposal , however , and so could afford to go about his work in the most leisurely way .

The match between the Ross First Eleven and the Gloucester Nondescripts , which was to have been played on the Park on Satur- day last had to be abandoned owing to the rain . A charge was to have been made for admission , and the proceeds were to have been given for the groundsman's benefit . This , of course , was a great disappointment , but in order to give Davies a further oppor- tunity of reaping a benefit , the club have de- cided to give the gate money at the Holmer match on Saturday week to Groundsman Davies , who is to be deservedly congratu- Tated on the excellent manner in which he has kept the ground during this season .
