( d ) To instruct all able - bodied men in mili- tary drill and exercises .
The Chairman called upon Mr. Curtis to explain to the meeting dealing with object ( c ) . Mr. Gurtis pointed out that until , we had absolute command of the sea , our food sup- ply was not secure ; that in naval warfare the possibility of an enemy's ships slipping . past our fleets and getting on to our trade routes , was a point not to be lost sight of In times of peace , if a farmer neglected to get in his corn when ready , the failure to do so was felt chiefly by himself , but that now it was a serious matter to the country if an acre of corn were lost through want of labour to carry it , and , therefore , it was a duty for every man to give his assistance in this work when the time came , and inti mated his willingness to receive the names of all who would help . Mr. Curtis also an- nounced that help to farmers in this neigh- bourhood had been promised by Mr. Levett , and that he was organising the men on the astates , with which he was connected , to help farmers on those estates .
The Chairman then called on Mr Harding to address the meeting on objects ( a ) , ( b ) , and ( d ) . Mr. Harding pointed out the import ance of seeing that any money allotted to this district from the Prince of Wales ' fund . should be properly applied , and asked all to co - operate in sending in the names of wives of any men who had left to join our forces . After referring to the need , that , will only too surely arise for providing suitable ac- commodation for convalescents after leaving hospital , and the importance of securing ac commodation for them at once ; Mr. Harding went on to object ( d ) , and prefaced his re- marks by stating it was , felt that the effort . he conducted by the committee for Ganarew Parish above . As it was hoped that every similar steps , and the committee had no wish town and parish in Great Britain would take to interfere with the work in adinining parishes . but at the same time corially in- vited all outside the parish of Ganarew ,

The servants maintain that Frank must be on the premises somewhere , as every door and window had been found bolted as they had left them overnight But they cannot find the missing bridegroom , and the search is abandoned . Ralph leaves in anger , half - acousing Mr. Trefusio of having " spirited " the bridegroom away . When May is told that her lover cannot be found she sheds bitter tears . But she is a brave girl , and proudly subdues her grief . Mr. Trefusis carries on a dogged search for the missing man along the cliffs ; but his health is undermined by the worry , and he is now laid up with a sharp attack of pneumonia . CHAPTER VII .
Soon after breakfast Inspector Jago and the vicar arrived on the scene . The Rev. Alfred Wilson was a magistrate as well as the spiritual adviser of the parish , and it was deemed necessary to take Dr. Tregony's de positions as quickly as possible . For that pur- pose the vicar accompanied Jago on his mis- ion . Tregony had recovered consciousness , but was so weak from loss of blood as to be scarcely able to speak . He had nothing , how- ever , to tell beyond what has been already re- corded . He described in a halting whisper how he left the bedside of John Trefusis and descended to the library in order to get a book . How he pushed open the door which stood ajar , and had scarcely got a step into the room when he saw a dim and unshapely figure looming up before him in the uncertain

direction .
In the bar - parlour of the Three Pilchards else that evening little was talked about , long pauses . No one liked to think ill of May though conversation was fitful and broken by Trefusis . She had reigned in the hearts and affections of the people so long that it sav- oured of sacrilege to harbour a thought that reflected on her goodness . And yet thoughts would come in spite of everything - thoughts that seemed to strike at the foundation of things , and threatened the overthrow of faith and charity .

The vicar smiled in response , and Jago gurgled . A careful examination of the room was made by the inspector , but nothing was discovered save a brown mark or two on the carpet , which might have been caused by muddy feet or the stain of blood where Tre- gony fell . The windows were securely Lastened , and , as far as could be ascertained , nothing in the room had been disturbed . Jago proceeded to the dining - room , and Mrs. Hyder summoned all the servants ; but the further the inquiry was carried the more the mystery deepened . The servants knew ab- solutely nothing ; they were all fast asleep at the time . The cook and Mrs. Hyder testified to the fact that the doors were safely bolted before they went to bed - that they made a round of the windows also to see that they
were secure .

The most serious problem of the moment in the eyes of all business men is how to keep the people , of this country as far as possible fully employed . Reduction of staff , whether in the warehouse , the shop , the counting house , the workroom , or the fan- tory , would be one of the worst evils which could befall the business community and the country at large .
We are endeavouring , in common , we believe , with other business houses- large and small throughout the United Kingdom , to act upon this principle ; but the public will realise the impossibility of doing so unless we have the support of our
customers .
We have made no reductions of staff , and with the assistance of our customers and of those British manufacturers with whom we deal ( who are concerned equally with ourselves to continue the full employment of their workpeople ) we believe that it may be possible to maintain this position .
A considerable shrinkage of business in the textile trade at all events , is inevi table to begin with , and this will necessarily entail loss and sacrifice in many directions . These evils , however , will be greatly reduced if the public realise the fact that the best way to safety is to alter their arrangements and habits of life as little as they can , consistently with prudence , and the economies which it will oh- viously be necessary for them to practise in present circumstances .
It is not our intention , therefore , to make any change in our usual autumn arrangements , the season's novelties being exhibited daily as they arrive , and every detail of the coming fashions carefully studied . There will be at present no in- crease in the prices of our goods . This will continue so long as possible .
