SAVE SPRING CLEANING 6 , BROOKEND STREET ASSISTANT MASTERS : Mr. D. R. Nicholas ,
ANOTHER YEAR
THE CLEAN and CAREFUL HOUSEWIFE's greatest trouble is DUST ; DUST everywhere .
VACUUM CLEANING is much in favour as
the MOST EFFECTIVE method of cleaning a house , and disposing of accumulated DUST and the deadly MICROBES lurking therein , and keeping it clean and wholesome at all times .
All our machines are worked on the bellows prin- ciple , which is acknowledged to be the best , and , in combination with this , we have a most perfect system of DISPOSING of the DUST by our PATENT . AIR - TIGHT DRAWER , which stands unrivalled , and is undoubtedly the best on the market at the present time .
It is quite an antiquated idea to collect dust in calico bag which has to be taken out every time it is partly filled , emptied , shaken , washed , and replaced . Think of the DUST that must escape and has to be collected again , making the work hard with poor results .
With our PATENT AIR - TIGHT DRAWER you have simply to take it to the dustbin and empty it , when it is ready to replace , which is very easily done , making the minimum of labour for maximum results .

LOCAL TOPICS .
That our dusty roads are a menace to the welfare of the district as well as to the public health , was shown by a statement made by a Councillor at the last meeting of the Ross Rural District Council . A gentle- man had come to look at a house at Wilton , and while he was waiting for the keys , several motors passed , and the dust was so great that the gentleman said he could not live there . Tar - spraying , as a temporary expedient , is certainly of some use , and no time should be lost in having the streets and roads properly treated . There is every prospect of a record number of people visit- ing this neighbourhood during the next few months , and it will surely he the wish of every resident that the enthusiasm invariably aroused by our unrivalled scenery should not be marred by badly kept roads .
£ 14,743 is the figure at which the Govern- ment Valuer sets the value of the Ross Workhouse . As an investment reckoned at £ 6 per cent . per annum , the rent should he somewhere about £ 900 . Even putting it at the most modest return of £ 4 per cent on the money , the rent would be £ 600 per an- num . It may be gratifying to the rate- payers to feel that they possess such valuable property , but when the rate- collector sends in his demand note hased on the sum above - mentioned , the pleasurable prospect will undergo a decided change .
a
The proposals of the Chancellor of the Ex- chequer have a direct bearing on this valua- tion , as future taxation will differentiate between the site and the buildings . Some relief is promised on the rates levied on the value of the buildings , but none on the site value . It is therefore most important that an inflated value is not placed upon the site , unless there is a prospect of the same being sold , in which case the Government would claim a share of any amount received , in ex- cess of the value placed upon the property by their assessor .
The fact that two cases of wilful breaking into premises and theft by boys in Ross were brought before the local Magistrates this week , would lead one to ask whether there . is something amiss with the education and up - bringing of the rising generation . Is the home - training at fault , or the system of moral instead of corporal suasion now in vogue in our State schools ? In any case we fear that the authorities at our public reformatories must be far too familiar with the name of our town and the unfortunate propensities of its juvenile population .
are
The arrangements for the second annual Musical Demonstration in Ross on Whit- Monday are proceeding rapidly , and all that is required to make this second attempt an overwhelming success , musically as well as financially , is fine weather . The manage- ment is in the hands of an able and energetic committee . with two hardworking hon . secretaries , of whom full particulars of the demonstration may be obtained . The Great Western Railway Company running cheap excursions to the town , and with a fine selection of bands and choristers , Ross should be alive with visitors on Bank Holi- day . This should serve as a splendid adver- The tisement for our beautiful little town . test piece for the bands is " Labour and Love , " by Percy E. Fletcher , which takes the form of a series of extracts from operas . The work itself as a composition is a master- ful production , and will be intensely interest- ing for the student and thoughtful bandsman to peruse .
A sucessful start of the season was made on Saturday last by the Ross Cricket Club , when they defeated their redoubtable rivals at Stroud . The home team included G. W Holloway and R. T. Godsell , of county fame Huggins the professional , and J. F. Lawson a young amateur fast bowler , who is to h given a trial in the county team this season and of whom great things are expected . The first match of the season at the Park , Ross was also played on Saturday , when th champions of the Ross and District Lengu were opposed by a side representing the res of the League . Runs were plentiful , an the champions , Goodrich and Bishopswoo United , remained unbeaten .
