During last year in this column , attention was called to the large sums paid for light- ing and heating at Ross Workhouse . We are pleased to note that the careful enquiries since made by the Guardians have been attended with excellent results . In his re- port at the last meeting , the Chairman of the House Committee , Col. O. R. Middleton . stated that a saving of between 40 and 50 per cent . had been made in the consumption of coal by certain fires where modern grates had been introduced in place of out - of - date PRICE - AS - May 17 , at the Congregational patterns . [ CYCLIST . ] May we urge readers to bear in mind dur- ing this summer that the Great Western Railway Company are extending the excel- lent facilities offered by the Rail Motor Ser- vice , which they started some three years ago at the earnest solicitation of a public ap- peal made through the Ross Traders ' Associa- tion . The service will commence on June 1st , and we have it on very good authority that on the results attained this year will depend the continuance of the facilities in the future . The G. W. R. are making great efforts to popularise the district by means of advertising , special leaflets , books and cheap railway facilities . There has never been a more favourable prospect for the Wye Val- ley . It rests with all who are interested in its development to use every endeavour to support the good work being done by the G.W.R. by inducing visitors to sta yamongst us , and make use of the great advantages afforded for seeing the district at a minimum expense . . The maintenance of our main roads is a problem which is causing great difficulty among our County Councils . The method and material are now so fused and confused . that they call for combined treatment . In days gone by , when the number of materials used for road works could be counted on the fingers of one hand , there was a distinctive- ness about each , and one method spelt one material , and the converse . There are now on the market a number of proprietary methods and materials , and to attempt any- thing in the way of differentiation would be a hopeless task . Thus , granite macadam was , until quite recently , combined with water only for highway purposes . It is now in addition combined , or grouted , or paint- ed ( as the case may be ) with tar , pitch , bitu- men , oil , and numerous proprietary and other compositions . The expression " macadam roadway " conveys , therefore no definite meaning , and the remark applies to other forms of construction . There are three primary methods in the case of macadam roads , says " The Sanitary Record , " and these may be concisely describ ed as tarmacadamising , pitch grouting , and tar painting . Tarmacadamising is done in an infinity of ways , the process varying ac cording to the aggregate , the composition of the tar , the foundation , and so forth . Pitch grouting may be either single or double , and again the process is a varying one , as als is tar painting ,, which may be done by hand or by machine . To these primary methods must be added a number of proprietary systems , some of which are , however , only variations of them or depend for their dis- tinction upon the addition of some patented material or another . In the case of town and city roads , there is little to note . Wood , granite , and asphalt still retain the salient features of former days , although the methods of laying and jointing and of foun- dation preparation have been improved in many ways . Execllence of material is the ROSS.keynote of success as regards these , and the greatest care must be exercised in its selec- tion . Heavy traffic has called for stronger . C. S. Some educational reformers have insisted that our whole school system should be re- modelled on the idea that the child's educa- tion can be wholly or at least partly paid by for in the value of the work done in schools where children are taught to do things as well as to learn things . A picture has been drawn of a boarding - school where the chil- dren grow all the vegetables required at the table , where they learn to make their own garments and shoes , where they beautify the school with artistic work , where they are also educated in things pertaining solely to the mind , and where , owing to the value of what they produce , education can be con- tinued up to the age of seventeen or eighteen with little or no cost to the community . It is an idea that is certainly worth considering says a correspondent , and perhaps that way lies the solution of our educational problems . LAMPS TO BE LIGHTED . Two WELCOME VISITORS . - In a walk in the meadows by day the cuckoo is to he heard very frequently and quite near the town , whilst in the stilly hours of almost every night in the neighbourhood of the Tank Meadow and Merrivale are to be heard in enchanting song the warblings of nightin- gales . The former is busy just now taking an egg or two from the tiny hedge - sparrows ' and other nests and leaving one of her own to he cared for hereafter . The presence of the faster brother or sister in the nest is soon felt , as its rapid and prodigious growth ) very soon hoists its rightful owners over the sides of the nest to perish . THE LATE MISS SLOAN . - Another link with the Ross of hy - gone days has been sundered by the death of Miss Agnes Sloane on Satur- day morning last . But the best part of her life . was passed as National School Mistress , and she taught the girls ' school in the upper room of the old Churchyard Schoolhouse for many years . Miss Sloan plodded on at her work in the days when , without disparaging the present , people were perhaps more con- tented , quietly and unostentatiously do- ing their duty , and when , at all events , teachers ' strikes were unknown . She was also superintendent of the Ross Church Sunday School .. The National School was given up , as was also the British and Foreign School in the Wilton - road , when the School Board came into existence , and the schools in Cantilupe - road were built .
