The pitch was somewhat bumpy , and several balls reared up nastily . It proved to be good policy to go for the bowling , and this Battersea and P. C. Bennett did very creditably .

One lusty smite a particularly fine one - soared high over the ground , and eventually found a resting place halfway across the adjoining field .
H. E. Meredith made a promising debut . He is a left - hander , and a batsman of that category should always find a place in any team . A side is not complete without one , as they are oftentimes a source of annoy- ance to the fielders , and are apt to tire them out more than anything else .
A pleasing feature of the Ross innings was the success of Battersea as a batsman . He got his runs with a nice variety of strokes on each side of the wicket .

by taking six Northamptonshire wickets for 34 runs in the first innings , practically won
the game for Yorkshire . There is every evi- dence of the Northern team being very strong this season , while Kent did quite sufficient in their opening match to suggest that they will be a difficult side to beat .
At St. Albans on Saturday the annual team and individual championship of the National Road Walking Association was held over a twenty miles course , consisting of several laps of the track in Clarence Park and two club honours were once more gained by the holders ( Surrey Walking Club ) , whose " A "

The spring meeting of the London District Rifle Association concluded on Saturday with a shoot by ite Territorial clubs . On the first day every battalion of the Brigade of Guards entered a team for the Daily Tele- graph Cup , which was won by the 2nd Cold- stream Guards . The competition on Saturday began with a march of eleven miles , and con- eluded with a defence practice on Stoney Castle Ranges at unknown distances . Ten units took part in the competition . The Daily Telegraph Cup , the principal prize , was won by the Honourable Artillery Com- pany , with an aggregate of 212 points ; the Civil Service Rifles were second with 141 points ; and the Artists Rifles third with 189 .
The annual athletic meeting open to resi- dential colleges of the metropolis was de- cided at Stamford Bridge Grounds , Fulham , on Saturday . The competing colleges were St. John's , Battersea ; St. Mark's , Chelsea ;
It may not be generally known that Battersea , assisting Brockhampton on the preceding Saturday in a match v . Tupsley , scored no less than 50 runs in grand style , but the hearty applause which greeted his half century so overwhelmed him that he was bowled without any addition to his score . In the same match Battersea took seven Tup- sley wickets , and had only eight runs knock- ed off his bowling a truly fine performance .
