A good general standard of technical characterises this year's exhibition . excellence with a lack of anything outstanding While ordinary folk sip these insipid pleasures , the Futurists are trying to turn our minds to sterner things . At the Doré Gal- leries the Italian Futurist painters have dis- plays that never descend to the antiquated vice of conveying any conceivable thing to any normal person . " No picture tells a story might be proudly emblazoned over the door . The Futurist poet , too , is at large , and we have had the edifying spectacle of Signor Marinetti declaiming one of his own poems . It was a feat calling for some ardour , for , in the course of it , the poet strode down the middle of the hall with a drum , beating it furiously . Then he went outside the door and continued his drum taps . Later he resorted to the use of a hammer to represent artillery . Clearly spring poetry will soon be as exhaust- ing as spring cleaning . But the Signor has a real vein of what ordinary mortals regard as Wakefield Circuit since 1880. The record is held by the Lord Chief Baron of Ireland , for the Right Hon . Christopher Palles has held that position for a few months over forty years . Abbot Gasquet . The report that the Pope will confer Red Hat upon Abbot Gasquet at the forthcoming in this country , says the Westminster Gazette Consistory will awaken considerable interest and not only among those inside the Roman communion , for Dr. Gasquet has a reputation an author extending far beyond the bounds of his own co - religionists . STONE DELIVERY , & c . Mr. FARR also reported that the Dhu stone ordered to Tram Inn Station had been delayed by the Railway Company through lack of sufficient siding room . This , said Mr. Farr , cropped up every year owing to the work . the increased traffic , and somewhat delayed Mr. MEREDITH : I should like the Coun- cil to define how often this road is to be done . Dom Gasquet is also a brilliant orator . The Free Church pulpit in London suffers successive losses . By the death of the Rev. C. Silvester Horne it loses one of its most impressive preachers and impassioned plat form orators . Mr. Horne's political activities did not commend themselves to all , yet was his perfect sincerity never in question , and he was never solely a politician . The resig- nation of Dr. Clifford's partner at West- bourne Park does not remove a particularly striking preacher , but certainly one with great personal force and one who was highly esteemed . At Westminster Chapel , I hear , they are to suffer a loss in the retirement next winter of Dr. Campbell Morgan . Fail- ing health has long occasioned anxiety to his friends , and the ominous sentence of " abso- lute rest " pronounced by his doctor and necessitating the cancelling of many engage- ments is , I am told , the precursor of his total retirement from the active ministry . By way of compensation for these withdrawals , we Lord Titchfield . required that morning £ 360 12s . 3d . to meet their current liabilities , and when those were paid there would be a credit balance of £ 1,718 12s . 9d .
